DARPA toy mini sim => huge disappointment TBH I was intimately hoping for a new game, and expected at least an expansion pack for DW. In the end, it's neither, just some toy sim based on same old DW engine.

Dr. Sid, I agree with Molon Labe, your attempt at joke wasn't funny at all and with the actual news about DARPA thing it was also confusing

All in all, not a good day on Subsim...

Now with this storm in a teapot (kinda) over can we get at least a semiofficial opinion from SCS guys about feasibility of ever doing DW2? I already accepted there will never be another DW, only for fake alarms like this thread to raise my hopes again (and then to crush them even more cruelly )

I have to be honest, I'm a bit underwhelmed here. I was hoping for other possibilities. I'll reserve total judgement until I actually play this new DARPA game. But I do have a hard time seeing the enjoyment of simulating the "brains" of an unmanned naval platform.

I wasn't criticizing Dr. Sid, I thought it was an April Fool's joke considering the timing of the announcement.

Dr Sid's post was an attempt at April's Fool joke (and a super lame one at that). The ACTUV minigame announcement came sometime later, after Sid's post. So it was not only disappointing and not funny, it was also confusing.

Well, remember this particular thread has nothing to do with the DARPA game... it actually predates that contract.

We weren't at liberty to mangage expectations, so I'm sorry if you're feeling let down. The Subsim community is an obvious spot to find people with a bit of a clue on submarine-related tactics, so it makes sense to announce it here and see what you can come up with for DARPA.

We are still paying attention to the comments in this thread.

I have been following this thread since the beginning, but kept my mouth shut because I'm still pretty happy with DW and its mods. But now I have to point something out. In the introduction thread this quote caught my eye.

And I would say the same if my own little piece of land decided to try something similar.

So, if it's real, I'll pass. But I specifically used the words "would sound", because so far I'm leaning towards the joke theory.

When Neal put the "Placeholder" subforum up two months ago, this was where it was discussed since the Placeholder was locked. Another thread popped up somewhere else too, but this one took over. The Placeholder was still over two months old, and that was the issue for me... not FuSoYa's question to us.

Great!...Most of us are (ex) military or engineers, that would not be a problem. I played with Steel Beast Pro-Pe, VBS2-VTK for years from a PC. Moreover, don't want to change platform.

SHO Advanced Torpedo and Missile Weapon Control

Advanced Torpedo Sensor Picture
What I miss most in DW and think would be a great addition to the game is advanced torpedo sensor display. It has been mentioned briefly in this thread but I would like to elaborate on what I think would make this a great feature for a future Sonalyst game.

1. Bearing or range data from Torpedoes display on tactical map.
2. Adding a torpedo sensor for the TMA display allowing the operator to determine the target's exact position by triangulation of own ship bearing to target and torpedo bearing to target. Of course the torpedo can pick up multiple targets, making this a whole new fascinating TMA challenge.
3. Adding a torpedo broadband and/or demon display for the weapon control screen, providing the torpedo's sonar contact picture for the operator.
4. Adding the ability to command the torpedo to attack one of its sonar passive or active contacts.

Advanced Missile Preset Control
Another aspect I find lacking is the Missile Preset control for sub-launched missiles. Currently there's only BOL (Bearing Only Launch) mode. A great addition would be adding RBL (Range and Bearing Launch) and be able to set the missile exact search box size according to how good your TMA solution is and taking into account other targets and the land into account when telling the missile where to find the desired target.
