Nope never seen that but I'm not surprised, since there was Heli on Heli combat in the Iran Iraq War. Choppers are also used for intercepts over DC if a light aircraft is involved (like a Cessna)

Could try throwing rocks at them I suppose.

I've heard reports of the odd firefight over the Iron Curtain and the casualties being put back as 'accidental discharge fatality' or RTA victims.
Makes you wonder what is still buried (figuratively) out there.

Reminds me of the Nimrod/707 intercepts during the Falklands war.

Come to think of it, that picture shows another strategic reason the Russians are always interested in the North Sea. Oil and gas rigs. Lots of those in the North Sea, knock them out and our oil production goes down the tubes in a large way.

I must say i am not copletely sure if the intel is relaiably, especialy since there is a contradiction.

Issue is: This Project 1824 Muna Class has differant call signs. So, i expect that it ones used to be a Muna Class, but has been rebuild later for experiments. Question remains if the torpedo tupes where standard on the BTP (ammo ship call sign) or were fitted in later.

Ships like those were re-purposed for many different roles, AGIs, actual fishing trawlers, supply ships etc. I'll check in my books after I get home from school and see if its a Muna or something similar.

I just checked Russia's Arms 2001-2002 (644 pages) but it was not in there. Tbh i am quite interested in the books (PDF Files) you have. You seem to be quite well informed i notice

And it's just testing responses, seeing how far they can go before having a jet pull up alongside for a photo or two. Also they in turn photo the jets that appear. It is just a big game really, and all is well as long as it remains just a game.

it's more than just a game if a nation violates another nation airspace with no less than one or two long range strategic bombers.

It's one thing to trespass another nation airspace with a fighter such as the MiG-29 r Su-27 but it's a completely whole new level of game when one tries to do the same with a long range strategic bomber.

It's what I would call efforts to make threats. Try to imagine one or two flying over New York airspace :-)

As to why the reason must definitely be political or even perhaps only related to Russia's domestic policy. Perhaps some people are trying to gain legitimacy or support by this show of belligerent acts. Perhaps to appease some hardliners still in the Russia armed forces or just to raise moral. Whatever it was it was a political message which only the recipient could fully understand.
