Oh well... off to Amazon. At least if I buy a flat panel, it should be easy enough to buy online and get home on my own, unlike all previous TV purchases.
Oh! Oh! Reminder time!!

No worries, all my shortcuts to Amazon point here.

Edit: Just ordered a Philips LED LCD 32" flat-screen HDTV, $498, via the Subsim link.

I know nothing about this brand but it was the only thing that had an optional audio output for RCA jacks, which is the only stereo hookup I've got at the moment. And it had a pretty good rating. I'm sure I'll like it fine as long as it actually comes on when I plug it in. And OMG it will be such a space saver... I think I will actually be able to put the cable box on top of the TV stand and sit this TV on top of it, which will free up some space in the cabinet as well.

I won't have it 'til Tuesday but having checked all the current ads for the local brick and mortar stores, there was nothing comparable for even close to the same price.

So - the die is cast. I will inaugurate this puppy (after I finish reviewing my kata) with the playing of Das Boot at the first available opportunity.

Edit Part Deux:Oh dear lord how am I gonna get the old TV out of here?

Philips, can't really go wrong with it. The company is from the Netherlands and one of the biggest electronics companies in the world.

Aye
My granddad used to work there as head of a Cathode Ray Tube department from the 50's till the early 80's. His department used to make the predecessors of the TV you just bought

Well after I ordered I thought... hmmm, Philips, is that like the "Philips audio" I sometimes hear good things about?

Anyway I know the name and have never heard anything bad about it, just not owned any of their stuff AFAIK.

And having the option to continue to use RCA jacks for external audio was really what sealed the deal. All I have in there is a small bookshelf stereo, the CD player on it went wonky a few years back but the amp and radio are still good and it's got decent enough speakers even if it's just the old two-speaker stereo sound and not anything fancy. So I moved it out there just to run the TV sound through for movies and stuff. In a small apartment it's adequate, it's not like I need (or want) to blow the walls out.

So at least I won't have to upgrade my audio in that room until I recover from this expense.

I was looking at soundbars last night though, supposedly they deliver the same experience as having a surround-sound set up only without half a dozen pieces of equipment scattered around the room. (One of the reasons I haven't upgraded is that I just don't have anywhere to put everything that comes with that kind of system.) Anybody use those, do they actually work as advertised? If so that would be an upgrade I could see going for in the future.

Oh, and I got the old TV out successfully. I did end up taking it apart, and my excellent bro-in-law came over with a dolly and we got the heaviest bit of innards out that way. The rest could just be hand-carried to the dumpster. I don't think we could've gotten the entire TV on the dolly anyway, even if we did getting it down the stairwell would have been iffy... so it all worked out.

When I placed the order they estimated it would be here Tuesday, now it's been changed to Monday and I've already got a tracking number. Plus UPS is listing it at around 30 lbs, what a relief. I should be able to manage that easily enough.

I'm off to look at the schematic of the input/output jacks to see if I need or want to order any new cables to upgrade my video connections.

The necessary cables are probably already included.

No, not to hook up external components. I have the cables from those that I was already using, I just want to make sure there is no newer, better kind of connection that I'll now be able to use with the newer TV.

It doesn't look like it, though, as the "newer" connections now are not ones that my DVD player and whatnot were designed to use anyway.

Looks like I'll have plenty of HDMI options though if/when I upgrade to Blu-ray or decide to add something else. (By which time HDMI will have become old news, lol, if it isn't already.)
