Whatever number Commander gives you, the game will also add 1 extra day for every 1% loss in hull integrity. Looks like 3 months or more could be a possibility later in the war if you come back really beat up, but you shouldn't have to worry about ending up on the other side of the globe with a grandchild on your knee. Random (if you have 100% hull when you return) I think can be as short as week or as long as a month and a half. Historically this would be the closet you can get to the way things really were; though after particullarly long patrols (120+ days), a very hard/taxing or very successul patrol the crew might have gotten extended shore leave to actually go home and visit family (Kriegsmarine, especially the U-boats were very good about taking care of their sailors and giving them generous leave when they returned from any patrol).
