And that's one of the weirdest things in maritime history. Originally a nautical mile as accepted as 2000 yards, but in 1929 the standard was established as exactly 1852 meters, or 2,025.372 yards, or 6,076.1155 feet.
So oddly enough, a nautical mile really is metric. ![]()
