Haven't had that problem.
I don't suppose you could make it to Darwin?
It's a bit out of your way, but you might not get a CTD.

Can't help you with the CTD, but- I can help you with the fuel issue:

Documents\SH4\data\cfg\GameplaySettings.cfg

Documents\SH4\data\cfg\UPCInitial\GameplaySettings .cfg

Not sure which iof these files is the one that you want- maybe you need to change both, I don't remember. BUT...

Change LimitedFuel to false and reload the saved game.

And NEVER EVER, EVER allow yourself to run THAT low on fuel again. Next exit 3,000 nm.

For SHAME!

Default Fuel Management

Late advice but you should make your own fuel estimate when starting out on first patrol or first with a new type of sub. Don't count on the game to tell you that your screwed.

To do the log, sum your waypoint distances travelled. At the 1/4 and 1/2 fuel times you can add up these distances to get a good idea of how far you can go on that much fuel. Of course speed, weather, and time submerged will vary the results.

Check too with your ruler, starting at half fuel remaining, to measure the trip home or to a port where fuel is available. Measure daily, and you will know when it is time to turn back.

You can also conserve fuel by running submerged, a boring long-distance trip.

This isn't true, is it ? Beause you have only very limited reach when submerged and recharging the batteries takes more fuel than just running on diesels. This is because one enging has to run on maximum RPM for recharching and only the other one is available for travelling.

You're correct. Best bet is to stay surfaced and run at about 10 knots.

This might just be my machine, but i have had CTDs when approaching Pearl and Midway and i'm pretty sure its a memory issue. The reason i believe that is if i just restart the game and reload the save it will CTD again, yet if i reboot and reload the save i can usually make it into port ok.

I'm only running 2 gigs of RAM and i have modified harbor traffic which adds many more ships to those ports. I have had games with memory leaks before and they acted alot like SH4, so i kinda wonder if SH4 doesn't have the same issue.

Anyway, thats my take on it. It might be worth a try, but it could also just be my machine.

harbor traffic will kill your puter. I have a pretty decent last issue Compaq with 4 gigs ram duel cor 3.6 and a 9600 GSO Nvidia card... anywho when i come close to land i begin to lag. when i come close to my base... oh god.
Use very little TC when near a port.

What version are you running and do you have the game patched to at least 1.4? There were some previous bugs in earlier versions that caused this.

Are you running any mods?

Fact as others stated, you get more milage by staying on the surface with the best speed being 9-10kts. Takes much more fuel to use engines to charge batteries, that fuel much better use running the surface.

Can't remember stock, but most supermods add the icons where you can check fuel range at current speed, so you know if you can make it.

One big mistake is getting battery damage which causes the batteries to never stop charging. Check you battery charge icon, if you're battery is 100% charged, but still charging, you need to cut the battery charge off yourself manually so the engines will stop charging it.

Default Erm...

.....there is a couple of buttons on in your nav station.

- Range to course end; and
- Max range at current speed.

Once I'm at 50% on a patrol I start paying a lot more attention to the fuel status. The above two buttons help a LOT.

A captain running out of fuel in a perfectly good sub would probably be fired once/if he reached port.
