Default Question About the "Western Approaches" Mission

I just finished the "British Supplies" mission off England's east coast. I sank about double the required tonnage after resupplying one time at Jutland.

I docked, ended the mission, and was looking over the map for a mission for my second patrol. The only available mission was for the western approaches.

Only problem is.... I only had 50% fuel remaining when I arrived on station off western England. That means I had no fuel reserves for combat operations and had to head straight back to base.
I traveled all the way there(and back) at 4 knots. Avoided all contacts enroute to save on fuel. (I knew it was going to be a problem.)

So my question is : How do you guys deal with this? How in the world will I ever be able to sink the required 100,000 tons without enough fuel?

Is there some way to refuel off the English west coast that I don't know about...I wouldn't think so.

I could turn off limited fuel but that idea stinks.

BTW...I did see a mission for "Blockade of Germany" listed on the patrol map..... but this was after I started the western approaches mission. It was not availble as a selection when I requested the western approaches mission.(I reloaded the mission briefing and checked..it was not there as a selection)

Thanks for any insight into this.

It has taken me 5 patrols , each time returning to a friendly port to resupply in order to get this far .
I use the lite campaign which reduces the tonnage . This is as far as ihave got in SH5 , if you finish one of the missions doesnt that unlock some other patrol areas ?
I have no freakin idea . You should have another mission up north where you have to sink a carrier and armed merchants or something .
As far as fuel is concerned , i travel at 10 knots and arrive with 68% fuel and then travel at 5 knjots in the patrol area . I return to base with 40% fuel and arrive at base with 15%.

Maybe that is it. Traveling at 10 kts is more efficient in terms of fuel consumption than at 4 kts. I'll try that but I will be very surprized indeed if I find I can travel all that distance at 10kts and still have 68% fuel.

or

Did you shortcut throught the channel? I went by the northern route figuring the channel would be certain death...as it ought to be.

No, I did not have an option for the German Blockade mission...as I said. I went back and re-rechecked. I reload the arrived at port saved game and go to the mission briefing and the single open option is the southwestern approaches mission with a deadline of June 1,1940 and an objective of 100,000 tons.

I enabled UBHS for the first time last night for a new patrol. I usually try to cruise on 9 knots for best fuel consumption, but was noticing last night that the speed will not go to a 9-knot setting; it goes down a bit (eg if setting 9 knots from half ahead), but then creeps up to 11 knots. I wonder if anyone else has this also?

dude. it the same consumption. if your upgrade the motor officer, he lets you go faster, while not increasing consumption. half ahead says right in the description that its best fuel consumption.

I only go thru the channel on the first patrol if at all . I use the lite campaign to cut the tonnage required , being a noob captain and all .

I just finished the "Happy time" mission and starting "Western Approaches". I tought i maybe would get some new upgrades for my boat ,but when i go talk to the u-boat upgrade guy in the dock the optoins are grayed out?
Is this normal ,or does this have something to do with my mods?

R.E.M_by_Xrundel_TheBeast_1.2 makes the loop antenna raise and turn as it's supposed to when you're surfaced. Then lower and be tucked away when you're underwater. It was supposedly in OHII but the only way I could get the loop antenna to do what it's supposed to was add this mod.

Install it with JSGME.

REM fixes are not only the round antenna retracting and heading accurate...

Main feature is about the hydro depth hearing accuracy
In short, the more you go down, the further you can hear! (well, there are limits of course )

I love this mod.
40m depth, you hear contact coming, raising periscope depth you loose it

Just wondering if it takes in account the sea surface (waves/no waves)

I always cruise through the British Isles, but I usually lure the the destroyers into deeper waters (For safety) and then take them out from there, the last time I played, there were only about 5 destroyers left, and they were patrolling off near the coast, so I cruise through on the surface at one third speed, because the VIIb's one third speed is about 9 knots.
