About the power-saving; did you just set the "put the computer to sleep" option, or dig deeper?
If you select "change advanced power settings", you'll get more specific options, including a timer for harddrives. Don't kow about the drive, maybe it's trying to verify integrity or something.

Kinda hard to spot, they hide those little links all over the place. Can be tricky to find something, compared to XP.
