The only problem with totally ignoring the overall campaign objectives is that to get access to certain Campaigns (ie: Operation Drumbeat) you have to do so well in the preceeding campaign

Don't worry, walsh. It will come. Lots of good modding and good times ahead, I think.

I have the same problem with SH4. SH3 is hard to get a lot of time compression on my PC, plus the necessity of changing the crew out every four hours makes me slow down and smell the salt air. SH4 TC works much better, so I have a tendence to rush all over the place looking for my next battle. I have to force myself to take my time.

I'm sure SH5 will improve with time. It's getting a lot more attention already than SH4 did.

Haven't gotten terribly far in the campaign just yet, however, i feel it is my duty to the fatherland to sink any and all ships with a british flag, whether or not its in my mission objective. Its now january 1940 and still working on the blockade of Germany. my last patrol i got 2 of 5 amc, a battleship, 2 freighters, and a tanker. only the 2 amc's counted towards my objective, but im raking in tonnage everytime i leave port, which to me, is my ultimate objective.

Problem solved! Use this little tool to skip right to Operation Drumbeat!

Does that function also change the usage of submarines? I'd rather not start Drumbeat in a VIIA for example.

Also, the last time I used it, it appeared as if the game just showed that youwere in that particular campaign, but things such as upgrades, etc were not available

Not yet, but what you'd do is play to almost the end of Mare Nostrum, then before it expires just bump your save up to Operation Drumbeat.

I've been playing the game the same as SH3, i just patrol the area that im told to and ignore the overall mission. Sinking anything that i come across.

Unfortuently i dont think im going to make it any further into the campaign (check my sig).

I play 100% realism and dead is dead. And it looks like im going to be dead very soon. Both electric engines are dead and theres not enough sea under me to lose the escorts pinging me.

I blame Nisgeis' U-boat Killer AI Mod for this situation.

Hope that i do manage to survive, But even if i dont. I had alot of fun.

Yeah. It's already been confirmed for the PS3. Different title, though: it will be called 'Crash Dive Bandicoot' instead.

Maybe a Wii Fit version, where you have to actually run on the balance board whenever you want to move around the boat.

You can hate the game, but get fit at the same time.

This is the NUMBER 1 immersion destroyer for me as well.

Until this crap gets modded out....SH5 sits on my shelf collecting dust

We can argue a lot about this, and there's no definite answer.

But I don't remember Doenitz sending anybody but some chosen aces on the initial phase of Drumbeat.

There's clearly a presentation/communication problem here, and its noted.

In SH5 you don't have to do the mission objectives, and anything sunk COUNTS. It would probably have been better if all objectives were hidden.

Actually that's not such a bad idea. Have the player patrol around and once he's sunken certain amount of shipping in certain area he'd get a letter from Uncle Karl or the flotilla commander saying that you have achieved this and that and you show a great example for the younger kaleuns. Of course the letter would be the only thing that would be gotten. Sort of like hidden achievements or something like that.

It's not even like the idea of objectives is that bad. I enjoyed the missions in SH4, particulary dropping people off or rescuing downed pilots. Like Elanaiba says it's maybe as much to do with presentation as anything else.

Personally, I never liked the idea of the renown system - it always seemed a cheesy way of saying 'score' to me. But what if special missions and so forth were tied to renown? If you are a famous enough skipper you might be picked by Bdu to enter a Harbour and sink a specific target,( Yeah, just like Prien,) It makes these special missions something different and special and makes working towards being trusted enough by Doenitz something important. Tie in access to new boats in the same way. In the campaign expansion for 43-45 () imagine being called into the flotilla office one day as a Renowned skipper and asked whether you would like to take command of a new type XXI...That would add something, would it not?

I think this would allow the best of both worlds - access to sensible and historically plausible special mission that may lead to tangible bonuses (Medals, promotion etc, ) and give a deeper 'gameplay' meaning to you long and dangerous patrols.

FWIW, I don't like missions in a sim of the 'sink x number of battleships' type regardless of whether they are optional or not. They don't feel right and spoil the immersion. But if the game had something like I outlined above I'd be very interested.
