If we're doing sci-fi mods now, I want one of these.

In all seriousness, though, a "sub-like" sci-fi game where you take command of a small ship with a cloaking device, flying about in space hunting convoys and warships, would be quite interesting.

PS: What the **** is a "super-heated laser engine"?

Oh I want this...so bad.

I once spoke with Bill Stealey back in 1987 on the phone. I had called MicroProse with a question about the game I was playing and it was near closing time and he answered the call. We talked about my question then bantered about flying real aircraft for a few minutes. He came across just like his nickname.

I think he was the juice behind MicroProse and Sid was more focused on game development. Just my impression. Bill also did a video promotion (dressed in flight suit for some reason) that played in stores when they released M1 Tank Platoon for the PC. I think if anyone can get a fire started for a new company, it is him.

We need some new "...action is simulated, excitement is real" for a change. Maybe we'll even see "Silent Service" reborn...that would be the greatest thing since the invention of the PC in my opinion.

Maybe once the kids get over the "zomg graphics" and "gameplay > realism" fads, we can get back to the roots and have some quality mainstream simulators again. One can dream, can't he?

That's gonna be mostly impossible. Would you accept watching silent movies anymore? Or even black and white? Or even VCR vs DVD much less Blu-Ray? Graphics are most of the experience anymore. These older games were great because we didn't have anything better. 2D panels is fine until you've seen photo realistic vistas.

A lot of people claim they want gameplay over graphics, but how many are still playing AotD or Silent Hunter 1? Lots of posts here say it's better gameplay and that graphics don't matter, right?

I really do wish we could get a Silent Hunter 5 with the kind of detailed gameplay that has been talked about. It actually might be possible once we get some key hurdles fixed.

Dangerous Waters did have simplistic graphics but conversely, the simulation physics behind the game were incredible and based on Sonalyst's expertise in its work providing sonar alasysis for the US Navy.

Most sims today have the opposite stance, developers spend relatively little effort on accuracy and cutting-edge simulation AI & physics, spending most of their time on cutting-edge graphics.

The ideal situation would be a game that balances the qualities between accurate gameplay/physics with the graphics quality. Sadly I doubt we'll ever see this happen in today's game development climate

I agree with everything you are saying but I simply must ask to nobody in particular...why can't we have gameplay AND graphics?

Because publishers can sell millions with neither.

Much as I'd like a Silent Service III I think this time I'd rather have a surface sim, perhaps "Task Force 1942 II"
though I'd think we are more likely to get something like that from Norm & Jim at Storm Eagle (Distant Guns/Jutland)

Perhaps we could ask/bribe/cajole them into giving us a first person sim layer add on for it too, I'm sure they'd have a lot of takers, although I'd liike to see some heavy revisions to their 2D UI plot/chart for this.
