I think Sh3 is everything but finished! I bet SH5 will took at least an year to refine (official patches, mods etc.). And i always found SH4 one step under SH3. Less interesting and for certain aspects, dull and boring
Good mod! Well done Captain!

I am most impressed by this mod. It looks just beautiful and the impact on FPS it has is not a problem.

PS There`s just one thing... now, when I watch video of SHV the ocean looks less impressive. Nothing special compared to SH3

I'm using it with sobers 3d waves and it's better to watch than T.V. or other visual stimuli, think i'll ignore all the meteorological, atmospheric and spectral analasysis..Thanks for a great mod

This environment mod is wonderful
The colors are spot on and even in external cam no long distance shimmering with minimal fps hit.

Very very nice work

I've been using RIK's environment in my current patrol. During the day with 9km visibility, no rain, light clouds, my lookouts detect ships around 7-7.5km. And during the night when I was shadowing a small 2 ship convoy, from a distance of 5-6km, my watchmen kept calling out "ship sighted", which would mean around 6km is what their visibility range was.

Is anybody else having different detection/visibility behaviours then say, the Gwx 16km mod ?
I remember reading colors in the environment files effected the sensors or detection ranges, so that could be it.

Hi Rik,

Thanks by this mod and also by acknowledgements on the first page.
I´m using in truth just yours mechanics ideas, the colors are self made for my own use. But i should like to say that the sea speed idea - more sea speed at low waves and slow sea speed when you have big waves, big mass of water - is really the best for realism, immersion and the best mechanics fitted for SH3 until now!

Thanks!

We desperately need a 20KM version...maybe Makman's MEP can be tweaked with the mechanics that Rubini mentions....

Hi Piri,

I compared the ranges between GWX 16 Km and SH5 Water. I let a passenger cargo ship approach my surfaced type VII from a distance of 18 KM and then checked the distance when the ship was sighted (clouds=1, light clouds):

MOD : Windspeed : time detected : Distance
SH-5 : 0 Knts : 12:49 : 13,2 Km
SH-5 : 15 Knts : 12:49 : 13,6 Km
SH-5 : 0 Knts : 23:58 : 9,5 Km
SH-5 : 15 Knts : 23:47 : 12,7 Km

GWX-16 : 0 Knts : 12:47 : 13,7 Km
GWX-16 : 15 Knts : 12:48 : 13,2 Km
GWX-16 : 0 Knts : 23:56 : 10,1 Km
GWX-16 : 15 Knts : 23:52 : 11,5 Km

As you can see there is no significant difference. My crew is experience maybe that explains why your ships have been detected at 5-6 Km?

Unfortunately SH3 handles big waves not to well, so it is always compromising. I do not like the way it handles the view when zoomed in. I'm still experimenting to find some better solution for the smaller ships.

Sometimes the waves are over the periscope and when you switch between the zoommode you will notice that in zoomed in the view is clear while at normal level you scope is clearly under the water. Hopefully the real SH-5 shows improvement.

Thanks Rik taking to time test these again
Interestingly toward the end of my patrol (first one with your mod installed, not much experienced crew) I've come across a few lone runners, and yes they were detected beyond 9,10km. I can't explain why that wasn't happening before

Sorry for the false alarm, it's all looking normal now.

Added v0.7: 20 Km version (see post #1). I used Hitman's 20 Km Unofficial version for GWX 3.0. I must say that detection range are stil in about 13 Km. However ships can be 'locked' in a range of 20 Km (see Hitman's original method):

I have tried a few environmental mods and thought i would try this one, Wow am i impressed, it took a couple of evenings of game time to see the changes in conditions that occur in game, and i have been stunned, fantastic work Rik, your ideas for the sea speeds really work for me. The overall look is lush, and everything looks a little softened and gives a great atmosphere.
I haven't got internet access on my gaming computer and do you know what, "i don't care" with stuff this good for SH3, thanks Rik and those that have gone before.
