Default JSGME and SH5?

So, assuming that there might be an offline version of the game at some point, will there then be the ability to use JSGME to install and uninstall mods with Silent Hunter 5?

And what about those folks trying to mod the online game? How will the modding work for them? Because there is one thing for sure here, history teaches us that the stock game is not going to cut it for anyone.

JSGME works for any game that follows a set/definable folder structure and substitution of files.

JS will have more thoughts on this but you could potentially combat the Ubi 'always online' Auto-patch by having JSGME auto disable activated mods after each play session. While this doesn't stop the patching altering file sets, it does leave your mods intact.

Then there is the question of compatible save files . Lets say that you finish a patrol with X, Y & Z mods activated. That save file is updated/saved on Ubi 'death star' Server. JSGME disables all your mods. The following day you return to find that an automatic patch is required for continued play of SH5, fine you do so. Game launches and downloads/syncs your last save file.......SAVE FILE CORRUPTED!!!! Thanks to Ubi meddling our Mods and latest Save state is of no use.

Whether JS wishes to go down the route of JSGME 'demagnetised my fridge magnets' is anyones guess. I'd imagine that he had enough of that with Commander.

Worst case scenario, but it'll be amazing if anyone even bothers trying to mod for this game until the tether is removed.

Thanks, danlisa. That confirms pretty much what I thought but with some technical detail.

Not necessarily. My post is pure speculation. We must wait and see how the Ubi System works and how it affects file changes and those subsequent associated game saves.

I'll resist the current '.........March' adage but we must wait.

JSGME was a life saver for me. Without it, I would never have had the confidence to mod SHIII and SHIV the way that I did, and certainly I would never have enjoyed those games the way that I did.

For the DRM folks and SH 5, I hope the enabling and disabling of mods is relatively easy. For those of us waiting for offline play, we'll have to wait and see I guess.

the way i see it is this:

first the game comes out to mixed reviews and lackluster sales but overall UBI is happy with the results "considering"

the first patch/update happens and servers crash, games quit working, massive accross the board scramble to have everyone reinstall the game to fix the update errors.

UBI does another update and this time it works as intended

then after this there will be a "large" learning curve to get mods to work without being destroyed by UBI updates.

because its obvious theres no point to it, modders give up trying to mod until UBI stops making changes

At this stage I will not support JSGME with any new Ubisoft release until compatibility is assured (or even required). In other words, use at own risk.

Sorry guys, this is not meant as "punishment", but while DRM/OSP may bring down Ubisoft's reputation, it sure as hell won't be bringing down mine in the process (I am more than capable of doing that my own self ).

If this means that an alternative manual approach to applying mods is required in the meantime, then I am sure you'll understand that it's not being forced on you by me.

Support will resume if/when a) compatibility is assured and b) JSGME is even needed (ie SH5/other games may handle mods through the Ubisoft Online tool - I don't know that much about it yet).

Regarding a), as I am not buying any new Ubisoft release, I will have to rely on guinea pigs letting me know if JSGME works. Fortunately, there's many, many users across many, many games, so I am sure I will get a lot of useful data to help me confirm/deny compatibility reasonably quickly.

I use it with rFactor and it works great. I don't know if rF was ever thought of by JScones, but it works. (Actually JScones, considering rF is probably one of the most modded games in history you should think abput posting your tool at rFactorcentral.com, it would probably give you a large influx of downloads/potential donations. Just a suggestion )

I would bet JSGME will work with SHV in it's current state, but as mentioned above it would be totally unsupported. At least for the time being.
