That said, modding is simply impossible under this scheme. You mod the thing, then one day it updates itself and wrecks the mod.

Sure, we have updates now, but people can hang back til their mod is fixed to be compatible. Since modded is usually the only decent gameplay...

So, if I read this right, we've moved from a game needing a lot of patching at release, to an unmoddable game needing a lot of patching at release.

I have been modding since SH2, later SH3 and finally SH4 (UBI games, cause I also have done mods for Dangerous Waters and racing sims like F1 Challenge)

But SH5 will remain out of my interest until the DRM is removed. No way am I going to tolerate that.

You make a mod. There are always some bugs. During the time period when you rush to squash the bugs, you feel responsible to the people that DLed it to fix it—fast. That is the principal factor in modder burnout, IMO. It's stressful to make something then have it be broken. At least when a patch comes out you can give a warning and say, "hey, don't EVEN install this update if you want to play my mod, cause it will crash." Or you might even say, "hey, this patch is not worth fixing this over, I'm gonna stop support above version X.XX."

With this, the stress will be over updates that smash things that no one has any control over. Not worth the trouble.

As long as DRM is out (either a patch or a "no-cd"), I'm in... The interface in particular needs some work

the real question is rather "Amongst people SAYING they won't buy sh5, how many WILL really stick to their assertion even when they will come accross the game box a few days after release?"

OH I will. There's a ton of games i might like, but haven't bought. Maybe ive gotten more disciplined, but more times i can count, ive picked up a gamebox of a title i wanted, and put it back on the shelf and walked out of the store.
I think the last game i bought (aside from L4D2), was about 4 months ago. Mass Effect 1, In the bargan bin for 20 bucks.

You know, I had been playing Civ III for a long time, and I still play it. But I hated to see them make an add on with some extra civ's later, so I figured, when Civ IV appeared, they would do the same. So I waited, then they truely made not only one add on but two. And I think they made it back when SH3 appeared for the original and the latest add on in 2007. I just bought my bargain compilation pack last autumn....
So oh, yes, I think I can wait, when a producer makes some "unhealthy" decisions... If SH5 doesn't get an add on with the missing features within one year, then it will only confirm my decision not to buy full price.
