this is my theory about the map:
there are several "campaigns", each starting and ending on diferent dates. For example, on the screenshot we see the "mediterranean campaign" that starts on january 41 and ends on september 42.
this campaign comprises 10 patrols (1 iron cross per patrol can be seen on the screenshot), those 10 patrols are grouped on diferent "events" ("mission gibraltar", "conquest of egypt" and "malta surrender") with a diferent amount of patrols each (4, 3 and 3).

the light iron crosses are completed patrols and it seems that the player can choose what "event" he want's to play next, and engages on the first available and not completed patrol of said event.

that being said i think each patrol is scripted up to a certain point (orders and stuff), and the dinamic part of the campaign includes: ships moving from port to port between and during patrols, the already mentioned "ship roster", the date of the patrol starting (you can choose the patrol you want to do, remember?) and maybe some other stuff.

if that's the case, the replayabilty might be really low, i was hoping for a SH3-4ish campaign with extra elements , and that being said, i hope i'm wrong and the crosses are just "keep up the good work" thingys...

I agree that the Campaign is the single most important element that'll make or break SH5. That's right kiddies, not the graphics , the Campaign .

As for dynamic shadows - I just took another look at the videos available on YouTube and there are more than plenty of shots which include dynamic shadows on warships and merchant ships, but there is none yet for the U-boat...

Absolutely not. How many of us play the stock out-of-the-box campaign that came with SH3/SH4?

@MM

'How many of us'? More people probably play the stock game than even know about this forum. Much less, use a Super-Mod lke Trigger Maru or Real Fleet-Boat.

Besides, the new campaign structure looks to be radically different than before and (if necessary) it may take the Mod Community a while to create an improved Campaign .

If the new stock Campaign is really good, then the game is really good, so sales should be pretty good and that means we all get what we want; the continuation of the franchise. Agreed?

That is a very interesting point. And one well worth considering when evaluating Ubi's decisions.

We have to consider how SH5 will compare with SH3 stock when evaluating any value added.

I dont know what is wrong with people this days i mean developers or this times is so everything about $$$ and that cash suck machinery is killing creativity
why they are so ... less creative

Red Baron 3d - Perfect campaign since 1999 that game is still on my old 6gb hdd

Knights Of The Sky(Microprose) - Another great campaign

B-17 Flying Fortress - Sweet game sweet sim sweet campaign - newspapers after missions, storylines when you get crashlanding behind enemy land and you can really bound to the crew
Aces of the Deep - same

SHIII + GWX/WAC + SHCommander - long loading times is no matter for me because i love to play this sim and randomness in sandbox this is like the sims got to be - no limitation by strange game rules and more consolish gameplay ( i call it sims or rpgs with too much arcade minigames, simplified gameplay, realism, etc)

Lets take this camapaign map from SH5
I dont want to know how strong and how many enemy forces are in ports, strange statistics in form of that iron crosses symbolise, orders given by "Game Master" instead virtual Bdu and where is kriegs marine grid overlay?

SHIV + TMO/RSRD/RFB - I dont like pacific campaign because of long distances to sail and i care much more about my fuel tanks, then blazing tanks of japanese tankers. Weak Japan AWS units but still i can enjoy this
sim(with TMO they not so weak ) I like US fleet Boats thx to "Run Silent, Run Deep" movie and Silent Service by Microprose thats why im still play SHIV.

When i waiting for SHV i hope that devs only add wolpacks, more interaction with bdu and radio traffic will be richer - all the SSS reports, ship names and yeah i really can change history less or more...with all significant events scripted in game
in example if i was able to sink HMS Ark Royal or HMS Dorsetshire maybe Bismarck survived and make some noise in the later part of the battle for atlantic, i actually dream about this when i get my hands on shIII 4 years ago hehe.

I like sims all kinds...
but when was developed by Microprose or Dynamix with passion and that passion is now in all those guys from sh modding community not in devs anymore
sorry guys.
Wish you luck with sales statistics.

it might not be the best thing since sliced bread... but i rather take a "crappy" dynamic campaign over a decent scripted one, specially if the game is about something like this ( just to make sure we are on the same page... this = uboats on ww2)

This is better illustrated in the photo in the first post of this thread. The circles I've added here are to show the repitition of the wave formation. Tiling was really apparent in the cloud formations in SH4, the new skies in SH5 look amazingly realistic!

sadly current graphic dx technology, you wont get rid of the repeated tiling, at higher camera elevations its easier to spot, it is getting better though with each new release , and harder to spot low down.

over all imo the water really does look fantastic, over previous sh titles.

Am I wrong in imagining the tiling might be less of an eyesore (for those who put a lot of value on graphics) when you include the 3d wakes to mix it up. I just feel like those repeating patterns might be broken up when there's a convoy of ships tearing up the face of the ocean. Then again, maybe I'm overestimating the real time water reactions. In any case, it looks infinitely better than the tiling in SH3, and I still play that, so I'm not too worried about it.
