You should have met my aunt. Tough bird she was. She was in command of 35 nurses. So, you can imagine 35 nurses amongst the fighting men who have only seen dirt, death and carnage for months. She kept them in line! She has passed away. Her husband also served in the PTO as a torpedo and aircraft mechanic. He is 86 and is in an assisted care home. He does not recognize his kids anymore. He seems generally happy and plays cards all day. Time has taken his mind. My uncle never spoke of the war but once. I had another uncle in the ETO. B17 pilot. Brother to my living uncle in the assisted living home. Shot down over Kiel 1943 and perished. Yes, sometimes I think I would like to visit that time and experience what it was really like.
