Install Firefox make it your default browser. Use IE only for Windows update.

I say install opera, it doesn't suffer from the plague of memory leaks and viruses etc which afflict Firefox and IE. I've used it for years, it's very customisable, stable with a great popup blocker.
Just touching IE makes me feel soiled....
