I've had many situations of seeing this in the text window:
"We're under attack. Ship Damaged sir. We have flooding sir. Ship Spotted". In that order. But after getting some quality deck crew and giving them some medals, they spot a fly in pitch dark at 8 miles away. I don't really know which scenario annoys me more

But I agree that your little experience beats it all. Even an sleeping deck crew would wake up when hearing a huge ship comming their way. But look on the bright side. If the ship hadn't decided to ram you, you would have passed it completely. At least you've found it, sort of.
