Dead.

You should have been aware of the damage to your boat.
Was the crew managemant screen showing flooding?

At slow speeds, you slowly sink. As the flooding gets worse, eventually flank speed won't even keep you from going down.

I had a similar experience.
I was damaged by aircraft and had some flooding. Some time had passed and I was on the surface. I felt it was safe to transfer some externals to the inside. I stopped on the surface, started the transfer and went to 64xTC. My boat slipped under pretty quick but was able to catch it and made it back up. I'm lucky i didn't go on a potty break.

Bernard must have been the watch officer. When you meet him in hell(U-boat commanders don't go to heaven), whack him up side the head.

No flooding. All good but the hull when I went away. I can feel a consensus on this matter though.
