Torpedo makes a bang noise just after exiting the tube on the surface

I forgot to mention this before, during my earlier engagement with a ship on the surface at night,I noticed the torpedo made a sort of bang noise just after exiting the tube, almost like a small impact explosion. It also happened with my second attack from tube 2 later on in the attack.I quickly checked the front of the UBoat as I thought it had prematurely exploded just after exiting and damaged the UBoat in some way.
It seemed the torpedoes were fine and carried on to their target as normal.
My only guess is that the UBoat was high on the waves at the time of launch causing the torpedo to crash down heavy on the surface before finding its depth setting.Waves were 7mps by the way,not exactly the worst seas to be in for bouncing torpedoes,if this is what they were.

Thanks for any info on this.

Sounds like it's more than a splash. SH3 still has some strange things in it (even with GWX). Unrelated but if I use the external camera or pause the game my engine noise cuts out & I have to change speeds to get it back.

Could it be that the torpedo is in the air when you release it in a surface attack and it hits the wave/water right after it is released. That makes a sound like a small explosion.

You might be hearing the torpedo tube exterior doors closing after firing.

VZ,

I am thinking your explanation may be the right one,yet the sound of the doors shutting is more a mechanical noise like when the periscope is raised or lowered.Either that or it was in fact the noise of the torpedo hitting the water from an elevated position.
Anyway,no big deal in the end,the torpedo found its mark

Can you tell me a few of the strange things found in GWX?,as I am having it delivered to me on discs by a friend in here.If I know what to expect I can look out for it.

Thanks.

IIRC OLC mentioned (a few years back, time flies!) that torpedos can indeed drop in mid air if they are launched when surfaced. They sort of fall out of the tubes, and get a bit of delay before they get started on their way. I don't remember if this observation was based on any particular mod, but I'd guess him being a thorough fellow, it applies to stock aswel.

The solution: earplugs, I suppose.

Why dont you try going up into the conning tower and use the switches on the wall or on the attack perriscope to open and shut the external doors and see if it makes the same sound.
if you quickly move to external view you can see the 2 external doors shutting - a round one which makes the tube watertight, and a rectangular one which makes the sub streamlined.

Have any of you ever made a potato gun and fired it without a spud?

What you're hearing is the compressed air escaping the tube after ejecting the torpedo. While the torpedo has it's own mechanism once it's in the water, compressed air is required to initially eject it.

Definitely not the same sound,I know the sound of the doors opening and shutting, and this noise isnt that.
The sound of the compressed air sounds more likely, like a sudden 'poof' or 'bang' , or the torpedo dropping as has already been said.

I don't use external view only when I want to hone skills in the academy, which isnt very often these days.It was definitely a rare moment, and may never happen again.

Well,no big deal,its nothing i'm sure.

Thanks for the replies.

Thanks John.

Personally I think its important to be patriotic, and without getting too political its even more important as our once mighty nation gets systematically flushed down the bloody toilet by cowardly wretches in parliament, and the filthy hordes that support them! I say line our UBoats up and blast em all to hell!

And on a sidenote,I think its interesting being an Englishman fighting for the Kriegsmarine,no doubt there were British sympathizers in real life.Actually, again, without being too political,I think its a shame Britain and Germany had to virtually kill each other for a bunch of bloody pencil pushers, why not go to war together?,against the common enemy (Communism/Bolshevism).After all,we both share a common heritage. The English practically ARE Germans! :rotfl:

Just my political views here, and in no way is it directed at 'anyone'
