Sounds like it's more than a splash. SH3 still has some strange things in it (even with GWX). Unrelated but if I use the external camera or pause the game my engine noise cuts out & I have to change speeds to get it back.

Could it be that the torpedo is in the air when you release it in a surface attack and it hits the wave/water right after it is released. That makes a sound like a small explosion.

You might be hearing the torpedo tube exterior doors closing after firing.

VZ,
I am thinking your explanation may be the right one,yet the sound of the doors shutting is more a mechanical noise like when the periscope is raised or lowered.Either that or it was in fact the noise of the torpedo hitting the water from an elevated position. Anyway,no big deal in the end,the torpedo found its mark ![]()

if you quickly move to external view you can see the 2 external doors shutting - a round one which makes the tube watertight, and a rectangular one which makes the sub streamlined. |

Have any of you ever made a potato gun and fired it without a spud?
What you're hearing is the compressed air escaping the tube after ejecting the torpedo. While the torpedo has it's own mechanism once it's in the water, compressed air is required to initially eject it.

The sound of the compressed air sounds more likely, like a sudden 'poof' or 'bang' , or the torpedo dropping as has already been said. I don't use external view only when I want to hone skills in the academy, which isnt very often these days.It was definitely a rare moment, and may never happen again. Well,no big deal, its nothing i'm sure. Thanks for the replies.

IIRC OLC mentioned (a few years back, time flies!) that torpedos can indeed drop in mid air if they are launched when surfaced. They sort of fall out of the tubes, and get a bit of delay before they get started on their way. I don't remember if this observation was based on any particular mod, but I'd guess him being a thorough fellow, it applies to stock aswel.
The solution: earplugs, I suppose.
