What I´ve learned here, is that a submarine is a boat that travels under water more than it does on surface, ergo the newer ones. I know they do travel alot on the surface, but no where near as much as the older ones.
A u-boat here is a ship that has the possibility of going submerged, but travels most of the time surfaced.

Thats what I´ve learned, but I guess its different in the states then.

Actually U-boat is short for unterzeeboot, which means underwater boat. In English we use a sort of latinized variant, sub-marine, which also means underwater. So they are the same.

Until the coming of nuclear power, all submarines and u-boats were actually better refered to as "submersibles", in that they were all surface ships which could live underwater for a short time. So they are still the same.

My understanding was that until the advent of nuclear power, submarines travelled more on the surface than they did underwater
