Yeah...I think what's left of the Maginot Line is digging into her back.

The thing is we got so distracted over her I don't we ever determined what that gear-like doohickey is.

It does remind me of some of the workings you see in the back of a watch.

My guess is that it is some form of ratchet wheel although what function it performs is still unclear.

Yeah, or on some older engine hoists. The function there is simply not drop the damn thing while I stop cranking to sweat and pant and wish for an hydraulic one like a little girl.
In this much more detailed picture it looks pretty similar, you insert some kind of handle onto the red squarish part to turn the rolling chain seen in the background, kinda like a one-way bicycle but I still don't have any idea what would it actually accomplish on a sub.
