![]() ![]() I descended to a depth of 80m (that's all there was available) and sat very, very still while they hunted over the top of me. I got pinged and I was a goner! |

I'd recommend reading this post for a crash course in how to evade destroyers: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...51&postcount=1

Several things you can do. 1: Don't go to the bottom in 50 meters of water, go to 30 meters. 2: Monitor the location of the escort on your Hydrophone. You can ask the hydro crew guy to monitor the bearing but he is kinda useless as he losing track too often. 3: The Key is to listen for the engine speed of the escort. If he has been pinging and then his engines rev to max, he is started a DC attack. 4: At this point you go to flank, you should have been at 2 knots before this. Hit flank, turn 45 degrees left or right and change your depth. Either go to 45m or 18 meters. The escort will drop DC on your last know position and depth. So by turning and changing depth you won't get direct hits. Don,t ever stay at the same depth when he comes for you. 5: As soon as the 3rd DC explodes change direction again by about 15 degrees and go back to 2 knots. Change direction by 15 degrees either way every 2 minutes until the next DC run. 6: After the attck go back to 30 meters again. You won't change depth as fast at 2 knots. If the escort is after at your 180 bearing and going away hit standard as he can't here you then. Thats how to get back to 30 meters. IMPORTANT**** Ask your navigator to check the depth while your getting pinged. Hell, the escort already knows where you are anyway. Its vital that you know the depth so you don't hit bottom. And if its 54m deep set your dive to maybe 47 because your momentum will carry you deeper than the depth you set. After each attack try to generally head to deeper water if possible. The darker the green or blue on the map, the deeper the depth. Now here there are 2 paths to go. For a single escort you can just wait for him to use up his DC's. It might take 2 and 1/2 hours. Yea I know, takes a lot of patience. The other option. (This is in a typeIIA by the way, which is a smaller target than a VIIB) But this would work for either sub. The DD will keep circling you. By following his bearing in the hydrophone, you can tell if he is going clockwise or counter clockwise. Now in a TypeIIA I don't have a stearn torpedo so I have to fire from my bearing of 00 ideally or from 330 to 030. I just took a DD out this way after he made 2 DC runs. Early on I set my torpedo to fast at a depth of 2m. With my Periscope aligned to my 00 bearing I set the AOB to 90 Port (the red side) range 400 meters and speed of target 10kts. This is the perfect setting for a DD circling you counterclockwise. When he gets to your 00 he will be showing you his left flank. The thing to be careful of is your torpedoes won't arm until they have run 300m. So as soon as he went past my 170 bearing I hit emergency revers to gain enough distance so when he was at my front he would be 300+ meters away. Being able to judge distance comes will some trial and error. I didn't fire the torpedo until he was at my 330 heading because I knew the range would be close. I aimed between his bow and center and the torp hit between his center and stern. As soon as I fired I dove to 30m and turning 45 degrees starboard. You can't assume a hit because the range is dicey and I play with duds on. A typeIIA only had 5 torps and when this battle started I only had 3 so I was only going to take one shot. If I miss its the 2 and 1/2 hour routine DC attacks. This whole senario played out because I was trying to ambush the DD in calm water and he changed course so I was further off his track than I had wanted and I hit standard engines and he heard me. In rough water he would never have even known I was there. Hang in there, just remember that in this game silent running won't help in shallow water. If he is pinging you in shallow water you have to manuever. But don't over work your batteries. A typeIIA battery goes down kinda fast. Just flank when the DD starts his run. You can kinda fool him a bit by slowing rising from 30 meters to 26. He will probably set his DC's at 20 to 25 that way. When he comes go to 45m. It takes patience and honestly isn't that fun always. If I was smarter I would have just let this one go because shallow water and calm seas will equal death after 1939 I think. ![]() Last edited by Otto Heinzmeir; 03-04-09 at 02:17 AM. |

On the other hand, in-game they can't hear you when you check the bottom, so you can do it any time.
