ASDIC?

Hi,

A quick question : is the "pinging" in SH3 an accurate recording of how ASDIC sounded during the real thing? I've read accounts of ASDIC being described as sounding like a rattling tin full of pebbles, but in SH3 it sounds....well....like a "ping". Am I wrong? If not, can anyone point me to a site where I could listen to what ASDIC really sounded like?

Thanks,
Dud

Apparently it really was a ping. Here's a sound file from the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool: http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/m...dio/asidic.mp3

In all accounts that I have read the Fahren descibe the sound as..."A hammer hitting the hull of the U-Boat". or "Pebbles hitting the hull" or "a steel cable/hawser being dragged along the U-Boat".
See this thread.

You can download my mod, above my siggy.
I have attempted to represent the sound of a high energy beam hitting a submerged U-Boat.

It doesn't matter really, all I know is that when hear that infamous pinging, i'm going down . I've never survived depth charging.

Well what do you do when faced with a destroyer? Do you go deep (100m +) Do you go to silent running (the Z key)? Stay at no more than 2 knot speed? Try and put your bow or stern face on to him in order to make yourself a narrow target for his ASDIC beam?

:DL I guess he tries to ram it in periscope depth then if unsucssesfull he surfaces and waves the DD with some sort of white supposed to be rag, but it turns out to be his yellowbrownish underwear :haha: :har:

Excuse me... :har: Don't know what got into me :haha:

Captain Birdseye 03-03-09 03:53 PM

:haha: Not quite!

I descended to a depth of 80m (that's all there was available) and sat very, very still while they hunted over the top of me. I got pinged and I was a goner!
