We had a thread on that a year ago or so. Back then they had measured the volume of sharapova'S noise, and if I remember it correctly they found it's peak to be reaching to levels comparing to a jet engine, and rated it as a health threat.

What the 2 of them are doing is the old martial art technique of a martial yell (Kiyai). Its good for 2 reasons, one it can break the focus of an enemy, and most importantly it helps focus power, speed and precision in a strike. Virtually all martial arts use some form of kiyai. Those 2 are just applying the concept to tennis.

Men's tennis isn't into this shreiking is it? I haven't followed tennis since 94.

It seems like all of the womens players shreik now

It is also used to mask the stroke of the player....apparently slices and spins etc are decipherable to a tennis pro very early in their execution by the sound the racket makes when hitting the ball.

I used to KINDA watch tennis - but the shrieking and grunting has made it intolerable to me.
