The tommies scuttle their own ships?

Just some moments ago, i encountered a large convoy in the middle atlantic.
I had some falke torpedoes on me so i decided to take out the escorts first.
Thankfully there were only 4 destroyers.
I took out the destroyers sucessfully and i played a bit with the merchants.
I exhausted all my internal torpedoes so i emerged when the rest of the ships gone to reload and pursuit them.
When i emerged i spotted a stationary HMT Aquintania or something.
I approached and before i got near enough, the ship sunk without explanation...

Any tips?

They obviously realised that the situation was hopeless, and took themselves out of the war

Obviously it was one of your fellow U-Boat captains taking his share of the spoils of war.
