Default OLC Gold GUI for dummies

Lately I've been playing with SHIII + GWX 3.0 + OLC Gold GUI (including the Mk IId update). I spent about half an hour this morning trying to figure out how to set up torpedo shots with the OLC GUI, but I just can't get it all together.

Is there a written guide to how to use all the devices, e.g. attack disk, Rings o' Confusion in the attack periscope view, etc.?

I do have both the OLC Gold video tutorial and the updated supplemental tutorial, but I can't sit there and conduct an attack while watching the videos. It just doesn't work.

Maybe there's a manual out there for the OLC GUI tools, but I must have missed it.

With MaGUI which has the whole OLC targeting there was a folder with tutorials. It had the video as well but screenshots of what to do for each step. If you can't find the download PM and I'll post it up so that you can snag em.

Manual targeting has always been my weakness, no matter how many tutorials I sit through or manuals I go through I can never get the hang of it. Some us never get the hang of it despite years of play; don't be discourged, you have a lot of company.

Yes, the MaGUI have a good tutorial. And this GUI is awesome, I recommend to try it.

Regards.

Usually people can't make heads or tails out of a written step-plan, and demand a video of some sort. Go figure! There used to be a written walkthrough with screendumps, but I can't find it anymore among my files. If you tell me what you want to know first I'll write the steps down.

For the attackdisk you can use this book, but OLC only included one side of the disk in his GUI. For the speed, range, AOB calculations you need to try the Magui mod. Or I believe Joegrundman's U-jagd tools mod also included that side.

Is there some similar to "banjo" of US Navy subs, for SH4?

Best regards.

With a bit of imagination you can think it (the following link) looks like a banjo. Sorry, I'm still not sure what the device known as Banjo looks like. Wether it was a handheld calculator or some sort of mechanical TDC apparatus. But this one is definately based a US handheld sliderule/calculator and used with SH4. The links you can find in subsim here about it seem to contain dead links to the files. But the following has all you need to make it.

This is the thread that introduced it here:

MaGUI is done really smart, once you have the bearing and speed of the target it turns the whole computation into a triangle. If I could remember my trigonometry beter it I know it can be done easily via formulas which I have long since forgotten; MaGUI does it mechanically for you though. Only problem I keep having with it is that it never really details how you get the 3rd piece of data (least in all the doc's I've gone through) so that you can get all the rest of the angles/lengths of the triangle in order to find the bearing at which you are going to fire.

It's a brilliant way of handling manual targetting by taking out AOB and making everything a 90 degree attack using triangles. I've seen the people that have really mastered it can plot an extremely accurate attack in 10-15 seconds using that gui.

Unless Makman94 recently added something that I overlooked, I can't remember it (the range and AOB finder) ever reducing the attack to a 90 degrees setup (I assume you mean uboat course 90 degrees to target course). It works with every AOB you encounter. And whatever your angle is to the target course. Infact, that's why it is so great, it's quick in any situation and reliable like a clockwork. (well, based on what you feed it, and near 0 AOB is hard to hit anyway) It's just that the 90 degree setup looks simple and get's results because the target is at it's biggest. And that is contagious. Everybody catches on and spreads the word (seemingly) without trying other approaches. If you feel like it, you can also position yourself to a 42 degree attack, or 108. It's allways a triangle: you, the target and the impact-point.

What makes you think it's only for 90 degree attacks?
