OLC Gold GUI for dummies
Lately I've been playing with SHIII + GWX 3.0 + OLC Gold GUI (including the Mk IId update). I spent about half an hour this morning trying to figure out how to set up torpedo shots with the OLC GUI, but I just can't get it all together.
Is there a written guide to how to use all the devices, e.g. attack disk, Rings o' Confusion in the attack periscope view, etc.? I do have both the OLC Gold video tutorial and the updated supplemental tutorial, but I can't sit there and conduct an attack while watching the videos. It just doesn't work. Maybe there's a manual out there for the OLC GUI tools, but I must have missed it. |
With MaGUI which has the whole OLC targeting there was a folder with tutorials. It had the video as well but screenshots of what to do for each step. If you can't find the download PM and I'll post it up so that you can snag em.
Manual targeting has always been my weakness, no matter how many tutorials I sit through or manuals I go through I can never get the hang of it. Some us never get the hang of it despite years of play; don't be discourged, you have a lot of company. |

Usually people can't make heads or tails out of a written step-plan, and demand a video of some sort. Go figure! There used to be a written walkthrough with screendumps, but I can't find it anymore among my files. If you tell me what you want to know first I'll write the steps down.
For the attackdisk you can use this book, but OLC only included one side of the disk in his GUI. For the speed, range, AOB calculations you need to try the Magui mod. Or I believe Joegrundman's U-jagd tools mod also included that side. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...71&postcount=1 |

It's a brilliant way of handling manual targetting by taking out AOB and making everything a 90 degree attack using triangles. I've seen the people that have really mastered it can plot an extremely accurate attack in 10-15 seconds using that gui. |

What makes you think it's only for 90 degree attacks? |
Here are some reasons that the OLC GUI video tutorials frustrate me:
1) The longer one was apparently done with an earlier version of the GUI. The current version doesn't show the position of your U-boat. So how am I supposed to plot positions of other ships, figure out intercept courses, angle on the bow, etc.? He spends half the video doing that stuff, but it all depends on knowing one's U-boat position. 2) There is no explanation, either in the "Original" video or the "Supplemental" video, of the new vertical scale in the UZO. It wasn't there in the "Original" video, nor is it mentioned in the "Supplemental" video. Can anyone explain the new UZO vertical scale, or how to work around not having a marker for your U-boat position? |

The beauty of the Range and AOB-finder is that you do not need the map to get a torpedo on target. You can figure out speed by using the periscope line and stopwatch (and a bit of numbercrunching). And the range and AOB by using those 'Wheels o' Confussion' as you say it. But I agree that it is preferable to get an overview of the situation by plotting. 2) Isn't it (a pdf about surface attacks with OLC Gui) included it the install package? Or wasn't it put in the documentation folder. Eitherway, luckily it is one of the few files that Filefront didn't remove from my profile. http://www.filefront.com/13481166/Su...in_OLC_GUr.pdf Basically you multiply the number of the mark with the mastheight, and the result is in meters. |
Thanks - I didn't get that manual with the OLC Gold download, for some reason.

Also I feel really dumb because I was wondering where the green "efficiency bars" on top of compartments went. Then I realized this was probably a consequence of the longer repair times feature offered with Option #4 of OLC GUI. Duh. |
Quick question...
New player here - never even heard of the Silent Hunter series until a few days ago, believe it or not. I'm trying to get some decent mods set up - and I've been looking for the OLC mkIId update everywhere and I can't seem to track it down. I've just found a few broken links or file not founds.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks! |
