I think splashes are in SH3, and also GWX, as this looks like a hardcoded behavior. I often get from the SO the message "Depth charges in the water" and seconds after, I hear the explosions. About cavitation... I don't know, never heard.

Stick to one knot and after he's passed over you, try to turn in the opposite direction he does therefore making as much distance as possible betwwen you both

I've got my own issue with a dd here. Frustrated me so much I had to cheat to see what he was doing. it's january 1940 and from the external cam he picks me up on asdic from 90 degrees off his mid-section. Only 70m depth here and he has given up depth charging me. Just constantly doing attack runs. I've tried everything to lose him but nothing works. I'm running flank speed now on an 11hour course to deeper water just so i can dive out of his range hopefully. Pretty sad I hope this isn't what every engagement will be like.

Well you wont lose him at flank speed
The AI will still do DC runs even when they are out - stock behaviour

Cut your speed to 2kts and turn 90 degrees as the boat is slowing
Make sure you are at silent running
Go as deep as you can and keep heading for deeper water

You should be able to lose him

The trouble with running flank is he can follow you and although he is out of DC the other destroyers he calls up wont be

Yeah I got fed up with the running quiet after the first 3 hours. Its not his passive I'm having trouble with. Its no matter what way I turn or when I turn he comes back in and picks me up with his asdic again. I'm using gwx by the way. I just don't it being possible to lose him for 30minutes. I can lose him for maybe 4 or 5 until he finishes his turn.

Reduce speed to one knot
Make sure you are running silent (Z key) and the little silent running screen is on
place rudder to 5 degrees port or starboard. After ten minutes reverse rudder position.

This will confuse him.

If he has you locked in his asdic and you have been making noise. Go flank with rudder at 5 degrees off center for 1 minute. Order one knot and turn twenty degrees in opposite direction while you still have speed.

Good luck

if he is doing attack runs on you and NOT dropping DCs that means he is out of DCs... one thing i have noticed with stock to GWX escorts is that they will continue to run attack runs on you even if they run out of depth charges as long as they are "detecting" your presence. the minute they loose contact they will search for you but then they will leave the area if you are not re-detected.

i disposed of an annoying flower corvette that was doing these "dry runs" over me by running at about 20 meters flank speed and allowing him to make runs on me... after i realized he was no longer dropping DCs of course... when he passed overhead and was in front of me i came to periscope depth and put a snap shot up his prop shafts... end of the road for him.

I have noticed that even torpedo boats will sometimes do little DC runs on you even though they have no DCs. :rotfl:like an angry toy poodle those PT Boats!

so just realize that if your facing a single destroyer and he is making the straight course high speed runs over you and NOT crapping on you - he is out of turds!!! :rotfl: use that knowlege to your advantage if your running for deep water at flank speed your batteries will be dead long before you get to the deep end - now what? take your time... as long as your nowhere near other escorts there is little he can do to you if he has used all his DCs

I appreciate all the feedback.

@GoldenRivet: Thats what was frustrating me so much. If he still had DC's and was dropping them atleast it would have been interesting. Atleast thats how it was at the start. But when he ran out and all the others left I was pretty much locked underwater with no chance to go against his guns, and to torp him would be quite difficult at such close range with manual targetting and range finding.

It just didn't seem right that a DD would leave his convoy behind to pester a uboat he couldn't do anything against. And after reading about the 30minute rule it almost seemes hopeless because 1 slight mess up or bad luck and the clock starts over. Giving you no chance of getting away unless your lucky enough to actually lose him for 30min which atleast for me is very difficult so far.

Shouldn't you be able to atleast outlast last them? I mean his mission was more then a success.

you're right they should leave when they run out of DCs... but if you would remain at 20 meters or so and let him do his run above you from stern to bow, when he passes over head go to periscope depth and fire a spread at him without doing much calculating... go to the plot solution on map screen and aim a 2 or 3 degree spread of as many as 3 or 4 torps in his general direction make sure all are on magnetic fuses at about4 meter depth... hopefully at least one will find him.

thats what i do in that situation even on manual targeting you can make something happen... it will cost you a few torpedos but you get out of the situation.

I don't know which sound GWX uses for the "Depth charges!" file. When I did my version of the 'Das Boot Sound Mod' I used their "Wasserbomben!" file, but I also did and alternate file for when I got tired of that one. I dumped the report, but made the spashes louder, so that's all I hear. It's pretty cool.
