I find T1's the most reliable, although i didn't know about the bug!
I'm in the beginning of 1941, so i might give those electrics a go...
Still love the speed options of T1's though.
Thanks for the tip Ducimus.
Well there it is, you learn every day.

The thing is that speed in SH3 is like speed everywhere else: its nice but it isn't always the best. Being patient enough to make sure that your calculations are perfect so that a slower electric torpedo will hit is worth it for day attacks. And that friggin bug has ruined me alot. Even the other night in the midst a frantic attack I quickly went to fire an elec at a target of opportunity but forgot the bug in the mad TDC changes. I realised it the second I fired. It happens to everyone. A little patience and I'd have remembered and gotten it right.

Don't neglect the elec.

May be ask modders to make little mod? In the periscope view, beyond red torpedo launch buttons make RED CAUTION "CHECK TORPEDO SPEED!"

I use the same electric torp tric as you, Nightcrawler (alltough you don't often get the opportunity). I don't understand what you mean with the calm water thing, don't you set your torp for a magnetic keel shot?

I too prefer T1's, but I'm using more and more of a mix these days. But i still don't have the patience to wait untill night to attack.

A T1 disadvantage: even if a merchant, in a daytime-attack, sees the steamer torp, but isn't able to get away in time, he will have still screwed up your possible one-kill-shot with his manoevring.

I'm not a big fan of electrics as the Kriegsmarine rarely gives me enough extension cords that are long enough for the torp to reach its target.

May 1940

I'm using T2 now as they don't give up my position when attacking convoy from a close position. As I play as realistic as possible, it's crucial for me. Also I hope that TIIs (as a next generation) have improved impact triggers and it shows to be true. T1 in high seas was a waste of time... more than 50% of them didn't just go off (midship hit with minimum depth set) but my crews morale surely was way off. As I roam around east coast of Britain now, bad weather is a standard issue...

A way around it is having a full load out of electric torpedos! Then you never have the problem of set up.

I get around it by seperating the two types (steamers and electric torps) so that it doesn't cause a problem.

Default My trick with Electric torps

As we all know, T1 will leave a line behind and a Electric not...

I dont like the electric iether because they are slow...
But.....

A perfect way to use the Electric torps is..
When you head on the convoy, see a DD comming straight to you, set the T2 torp at 2 and raise your scope at max(HERE I AM...) the DD will go faster straight toward you, and you can use the T2 torp, and make a bow-shot...
Bow-shot are very deadly for a DD... 1 torp and that DD is wasted specialy the bow, the water will comes in very fast.... and the DD will sink fast...

But.. to use the T2, the water have to be dead-calm otherwise it will blows-up half way...

My second mission i will have some T2 torps as test-torp, and i will try that trick...
It works in SHII, so why not in SHIII

But after that mission i make sure that most of the torps will be T1 and and will have 3 T2 torps in case of deadcalm water...

Will see

Wow! Does it works often? Do DD's always fell to this trick and head straight towards you all the time?
What is the minimum range to fire that kind of shot?
And what depth setting you use?

With a DD coming at me, 400 meters for the torpedo to arm and magnetic under the keel.

I don't like electric either because it's a bit harder to view them in external view.

And fast torpedoes have a bigger chance of hitting a target than slow torpedoes.

It seems to me that T2's go off prematurely more often than T1's when set to magnetic pistol but I'm not sure about that. Could be that it happens because they spend more time because they're always at 30 kts.

Hm. I always fully loaded with electric (except times when I refit on another base or ship or milkcow), may be thus I have no problems with hitting the targets :-)
