It won't help you much if any. But if it is as deep as you can go, moving a few meters off the bottom is the thing to do. If for some reason you need to touch bottom, do it slowly and gently.

It does not help at all. I know this from experience. They will still ping the crap outta you and blast you to kingdom come.

Shame it's not modelled. Ah well.

Yep, I'm with Mookie on this one! There I was on patrol #2 at 96m bottomed out. I was pinged to death and then DC'd to death . No dice for hanging on the bottom. I stay were it is REALLY DEEP!

That's exactly how it happened to me. I made a big mistake, attacking this convoy off the northern coast of Scotland. When it comes time to evade, I ping the depth...

"Depth under keel is 50 meters, sir!"

During my evasion maneuvers I planted the boat on the bottom a bit too hard, tearing out the keel and causing major flooding. The DD's just finished me off while I sat helpless at the bottom. It was my 2nd patrol, too. I guess that makes me a full fledged memeber of the club.

Lesson learned: always know how much real estate you have under you before you attack!

In reality sitting on the bottom had one great effect: depth charges would either go off too shallow, or they would hit the bottom and sit there. Even if they went off on the bottom the blast would be directed upward, rendering the submarine reasonably safe. Several captains reported surviving 12-18 hours of depth-charging by sitting on the bottom. It was an accepted doctrine that a rough seafloor could indeed deflect sonar beams in odd directions, also decreasing the likelihood of detection.

Unfortunately, none of this is modelled in the game.
