sitting on the bottom
is sitting on the bottom an effective technique of evasion or is it to loud when you hit the bottom? saw it the other day in the movie enemy below
|
It's not modelled in the game at all unfortunately.
|
It won't help you much if any. But if it is as deep as you can go, moving a few meters off the bottom is the thing to do. If for some reason you need to touch bottom, do it slowly and gently.:yep:
|
It does not help at all. I know this from experience. They will still ping the crap outta you and blast you to kingdom come.
Shame it's not modelled. Ah well. |

If you can rest on the bottom -------
YOU'RE NOT DEEP ENOUGH!!!! ;) |
What about running shallow? At the beginning of the war the sub commanders used to run at periscope depth to evade DDs because they knew their listening gear couldn't operate at that angle. Is that modeled?

They've always heard me at periscope depth. I've learned my lesson about hunting convoys in shallow waters.

Active sonar "pings" are actually reflected by density changes - they don't bounce back towards the sender from your hull, they bounce back from the air space inside the pressure hull
So, in reality, sitting on the bottom shouldn't help you evade active sonar. |

"Depth under keel is 50 meters, sir!" :damn: :dead: During my evasion maneuvers I planted the boat on the bottom a bit too hard, tearing out the keel and causing major flooding. The DD's just finished me off while I sat helpless at the bottom. It was my 2nd patrol, too. I guess that makes me a full fledged memeber of the club. Lesson learned: always know how much real estate you have under you before you attack! |

And yet another member of the 2nd patrol club.....man, it is starting to look like a gang:o |
It's better to move off and away at 1kt to try to evade. Sitting on the bottom just makes you an easy target.
