I've seen the movie a couple of times but some friends gave me the DVD as a present during Christmas

The best Das Boot treat you can give yourself is reading the book . I'd seen the film first and own the DVD, but reading the book surpassed even that experience. It also makes you realise just how good a book->movie conversion it is. Possibly the best I've ever come across....

I like it too, but 1 thing I'll never understand - the title. What the hell has it common with boots?

Actually I prefer the movie to the book, and that is rare. However there's another very good submarine book=>movie conversion: Hunt For Red October. Apart from a few small things they took out of the movie to make it shorter ...

In any case. I never forgave the Academy that Das Boot didn't get any of the Oscars it was nominated for AND that it wasn't even nominated for best foreign language movie that year. :-(

Maybe they've got something against German-made war films? Der Untergang (aka Downfall) was nominated yet failed to win and I thought that was an outstanding film too. I haven't seen the Spanish film that did win, though, so I can't say if it is genuinely better or not...

Possibly ... Over the years I have also come to the conclusion that rarely the best films win. How else do you think does a mediocre movie like "Titanic" could've won so many Oscars. For a movie based on an historic event it's pretty unrealistic Maybe it's just my taste in movies. After all I'm an old European, and we're all backward and different (no I haven't forgiven Rumsfeld either) :rotfl:

What is really interesting about Das Boot(I have the directors cut) is that there really is no decernible plot to speak of but it grabs and holds your attention for over 3 hours. Now that is a darn good movie to do that. What really sucks is the boys make it through all the crap on patrol and bite the bullet in their own port. Man what a bummer because after 3 hours watching the crew you kind of find they are likable characters.

It is the characters & their interaction within a realistic setting that make the movie and the book.

I aslo prefer the movie to the book. The english translation of the book is almost unreadable to me. I heard there were two versions out there and I guess I have the wrong one. Makes me wonder how the translator ever passed his english class.
Nevertheless, I have learned more about life onboard U-boats from the Das Boot book, then from any other book on this subject.
And of course, if you can read German, reading the original must be amazing!
