And it's variation. 15(b) the PC will be an orphan brought up by a wise old man and will have no inkling of his amazing, heroic and quite possibly divine heritage until he first comes across the big bad guy's minions, and even then it will take endless touchy feely discussions with a wood elf lady before he realises his 'destiny'. Case in point: All D&D Forgotten Realms CPRGs ever.

Which is kind of odd when you consider that D&D is about a bunch of average joe heroes finding +2 swords of Orc bashing so they can go adventuring to 'Kill things and take their stuff'.
