Since you already have SH4, you've made a wise choice to go with OM. That said, SH3 is very cheap these days. When you asked about the "goodies" I should have shown you this thread.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=170090

What makes me sad is that any of the mods listed in that thread could be done for SH4, which is the better (more advanced) game. But no one seems interested.

No you don't - have to swallow it whole, that is. You can always take little bites.

I think SH4 is better adapted for PTO. For U-Boats, SH3 (GWX or NYGM or LSH3 or WAC) is the option. I tried and I have installed OM (with OMEGU), but - in my machine - is buggy. And lacks all that fun stuff of SH3, because it isn´t attractive to the modders...(I don´t know why). I think SH3 plus some supermod plus other goodies is very very immersive, plus SH3 Commander, is the the best U-Boot subsim.

SH4 - with better graphics and better crew management than SH3, is a cold game. I use TMO plus RSRDC, and FOTRS, both greats mods and the best for SH4, but SH3 is....better, friendly, and immersive. Or only is my sensation...?

Of course, I bought SH5, and I uninstalled it...It is a comic game, with comic crew, I prefer Sierra´s Aces of the Deep: more comic, more immersive.

Regards.

Sh4+OP Monsun = nice graphics
SH3+GWX+Cmdr = better immersion

Honestly, and this is just my opinion, going (or going back to) SH3 is either a labor of uboat love, or a walk down nostalgia lane as a weekend tourist. For all it's touted immersion, i personally find it really hard to go back to.

Maybe its because i've already played it for a couple years (in fact i've played SH3 far more then i have ever played SH4), or maybe it's because while i love WW2 submarines in general, I'm not a devoted lover of uboats. Though, don't get me wrong here, i'm about as read up on Uboats as I am on fleet boats, I'm just not a fanboy.

But whatever it is, something REALLY hinders my enjoyment of SH3. I think its a combination of dated graphics, and really long loading times. With GWX, expect a 5 minute wait every time you load a game. Although, I've always had this issue with SH3 in general. I would sit there and stopwatch how long it took to load a game. Drove me nuts.

I agree. What keeps me playing SH3 is all the mods, and Commander (of course I'm biased because of the ship names ).

SH4 with the same mods as SH3 would be a far better experience, and not just because of the graphics. We know that part of SH3's loading problem is the ship files, and the more you add the longer it takes to load. SH4 changes that completely, so if I had a way to name the ships they wouldn't only be named, they would have the proper names for each country, and all the countries could have all the ships and still load faster.

SH4 could be the best of them all if the modders would just look at it. Of course I don't mean you, Ducimus; you have looked at it long and hard and done your part to make it a great experience. I just feel like it's the poor relative who never gets a chance to shine.

That's a social/community issue. I would toss in "modder politiics" as well, but honestly... i don't see that being the case. All the old school modders seem to be done yelling and screaming at each other.

But anywho, i think its a social issue. Fans of any subject, I think tend to be close minded. Being a fan means, if its not mainly about what your into, your just not interested, so whatever it is, simply doesnt exist. For fans of Uboats, the Silent Hunter series is comprised of 2, 3, and 5. Titles number 1 and 4 simply don't exist.

At one point i did try to do , what i thought was some pretty cool stuff. But ultimatly, burnout (mainly burnout), and low community interest lead me to just quit, and drop the ball on that.

These guys keep talking about immersion. I'm not going to start an argument. Instead, I will suggest something I think is vital for immersion - the Das Boot Sound Mod:

And a little fix I made to go with it:
