I never shoot at merchants from more than 1000 meters, 500 if possible. As for destroyers, I don't attack them at all. If I did, I would only shoot from 1000 meters or less, and only if he was passing in front of me and didn't know I was there. This is pretty funny because back in the Silent Service days I used to dogfight with destroyers. Of course in that game you were aware of the exact position of every ship and could shoot torpedoes from any depth.

I always use the real-life rule that u-boats were absolutely forbidden to use the English Channel to transit to the Atlantic. In August 1939 they didn't want the Brits to know what they were up to, and after the war started they knew that the Royal Navy's largest base, Portsmouth, was in the Channel and the Dover end would almost certainly be mined.
