I never shoot at merchants from more than 1000 meters, 500 if possible. As for destroyers, I don't attack them at all. If I did, I would only shoot from 1000 meters or less, and only if he was passing in front of me and didn't know I was there. This is pretty funny because back in the Silent Service days I used to dogfight with destroyers. Of course in that game you were aware of the exact position of every ship and could shoot torpedoes from any depth.

I always use the real-life rule that u-boats were absolutely forbidden to use the English Channel to transit to the Atlantic. In August 1939 they didn't want the Brits to know what they were up to, and after the war started they knew that the Royal Navy's largest base, Portsmouth, was in the Channel and the Dover end would almost certainly be mined.

Ahh the memories, Silent Service II , let the destroyer know where you are, stay still, let him come towards you gun barrel straight and fire a torp at him 0 deg AoB. Pick off the merchants with your unlimited ammo deck gun.
Sorry for going off topic but I think we have all found Kiel now

I would circle at 300'. I got very good at predicting where one would be and firing from there. I had a very good hit rate. When the game lets you cheat it becomes easy.

You can get away with it in Sept. or Oct. 1939. After that, it's certain, sudden death.

You couldn't get away with it in real life. Even if you survived the passage your career would not survive your flaunting of orders.

I don't actually attempt it anymore. My first two patrols ever in vanilla SH3 saw me get through it but when I realized how heavily mined it is, haven't attempted it since...
