Hi,

I'm not a Vista user yet, but i presume you can create a folder, name it like you want ( "MyGames", for exemple). When installing a game, the installer will prompt you and ask where you want to install it. You can, here, type the path of your choice ( for exemple : C:\MyGames\****SH4 ).

May i ask why it should be a so big problem to disable UAC ?? This feature seems to be the culprit in a lot of problem i can hear. At last in gaming circle ..

Krauter - as Marco_Ramius mentions, just alter the default install path (when the installer gets to that point) to whatever directory you want. You don't even need to create the directory beforehand, as the installer will create it if it does not already exist. This is the same behaviour as installers in XP, btw.

Marco_Ramius - disabling UAC from the control panel would fix the issues with SHIV (ie. issues with patches not taking and such), but it may also mess up OS updates and security patches, so it's easier to bypass it then to outright disable it (which, since it is so easily bypassed, does just show how lame the implementation of this "feature" is).

Krauter, if you reinstall, after uninstalling SHIV (use the Control Panel - "Program and Features" to do that), go into your user directory and enable hidden folders in the view options (under the menu Tools -> Folder Options ->View tab). Delete the SHIV folder in "AppData\Local\Virtual Store\Program Files". Now, re-install SHIV but put it in the folder of your choice, just so long as it is NOT the default "Program files" folder.

P.S. I'm not posting anything new either - all of this information was posted long ago by earlier Vista users then I, in the SHIII forums, and it's in these SHIV forums as well. My SHIII (GWX 1.03+SH3 COmmander) and SHIV (+ JSGME and mods) all run fine this way under Vista - no issues at all.

Well, I've tried the uninstall, set into a dif, directorie, worked fair enough, i can now save, but they don't take effect, even worse.. Im stuck using the stock SH4! I've downloaded the 1.3 patch, it says no current version exists and that it cant patch over something that doesnt exist..

With Furor..

Krauter

And you deleted the hidden directory I mentioned a few posts back? You have to get rid of the hidden remnants of your default install in the AppData directory too, BEFORE you reinstall into a directory of your choice.

If you did do that, then I'm not sure what is happening, as SHIV, with patches and mods, works on my Vista Home Premium setup.

:hmm: :hmm:

P.S. also very important to uninstall from the control panel tool - else you'll need to edit your registry by hand before reinstalling.

Aye sir, I could not find the AppsData directory in my file folders for a while, searched it, and found it, however the piece to "Enable hidden """ " i did not do.. I also un-installed with the control panel, installed in a seperate directory, however the game works, I can only use v.1.0

With Respect,

Krauter

Default Vista

I have been reading about all the problems with Vista with some concern. When IBought my computer last year it came with X p. I had a crash and had to format and reload. Gateway sent me Vista Home Premium free. Deceided to try it. Only game that had a problem was SH 4. I tried a lot of the good ideas and failed to resolve the problems until today, my third day of working on it. I loaded into the program files which is default. SH 4 did't load an icon. I went into my program files and found the exe file. I right clicked and told it to run as adminstrator, then to desk top. I loaded the update with no trouble and it ran fine. I loaded jsgme and again did a right click and told it to run as adminstrator.I found the game to run fine. I took the three tru mods and had rar open them in my documents and copied and pasted them. It didn't seem to work extracting into the Mod folder. Copy and paste worked. Ran jsgme and applied the mods. The game worked fine. Ran pungo pete long enough to save the game. I now can click on my Sh4 icon and run the game without the disk. I am not a computer wizard but an old navyvet that got forced to go with Vista and was't going to let beat me.{I almost gave up and put XP back on} I kind of like it now. I hope this helps any other sailors out there hating Vista.

Seems to me that vista was made more friendly to the not so PC knowledgeable people.

It seems to want to take control of everything... I am happy with XP and will keep it until it is no longer viable.

The MS downgrade to XP from Vista is not new. MS has been offering this from day one.

No doubt MS has a long way to go to make Vista popular. I expect a lot to change in the 1st service pack (I never buy a MS OS until SP1.) In the mean time, the end-of-life SP3 for XP (which will probably make it the 1st perfect OS MS has ever created) is in work. Well not perfect, but how close can you get?

There's an interesting slide show Ziff Davis site put out bashing Vista. Usually computer interest/training publishers get behind new OSes because they markedly increase sales of support related/QA books and mags.

I certainly won't be changing until the software I want to run is no longer available for XP and that isn't going to happen for a very long time. The more I use Vista at work, the less I like it.

On the subject of drivers, it isn't Vista that caught hardware driver programmers off guard. Vista betas were available for a very long time. One of the main purposes was to allow driver makers to develop and test for Vista. Can't blame MS for that. Vista was most of two years behind on release and still was a problem for drivers, but that is the history of the undustry since 98 not just Vista. Plenty of time for programmers to get on board. Pretty hard though to ruggedly test drivers for a new platform almost no one has while game develpers are pushing the demand for driver refinements for existing hardware/Os's at lightning speed.

Vista is working great for me, I have Uac turned off, and also tweaked alot of useless services/process. No problems with any of my games. Vista is day and night compared to when i was gaming when i left for iraq, now with this new laptop and gaming with vista is alot better, make sure u have all the hotfixes, thats what fixed me up.
