Wow, I just looked at some of the recommended mod lists for sh5. That's a lot to keep track of. I found out my comp does meet the minimum requirements but if I need to install 10+(at the minimum it seems) mods just to fix the broken parts, then I think my time will be better spent just playing sh3.

Play what your computer specs will allow but most importantly...enjoy the experience.

To me, SH5 is like a modern movie about a WWII submarine, but SHIII is Das Boot. It's older, less flashy, but full of atmosphere.

Released in 1981, Das Boot is closer in age to today than to WW2. It is a modern movie about a WW2 submarine, very different from movies made during and immediately aftet the war, regardless of their country of origin. It doesn't have CG fx, but neither does Ep 4, a pretty modern movie.

To me, the quaint WWII sub movies of the post war era were amusing but really not very realistic. Das Boot is the movie that gave me the feeling of actually being in a U Boat, and it was the reason that I purchased SHIII.

More modern movies often rely on cg fx as a substitute for lack of plot, and such movies are therefore not for me.

Das Boot is a strongly anti-war film based on a strongly anti-war book written during the height of anti-war politics of the Seventies. It is no more an accurate portrayal of submarine warfare than the rah-rah jingoistic films of the 40s. The portrayal of U-boat sailors as a bunch of happy-go-lucky youths ambushed by a KM recruiter on their way to watch a soccer match does a disservice to the professionalism and discipline of the German navy. I say this as an ardent anti-Nazi.

YMMV

The point I made regarding Das Boot was that it was the only film I've seen that made me feel as if I was on a WWII submarine....not in terms of the politics of the movie, but in terms of the atmosphere created.

The set was constructed in a way that no submaine movie before it had been. It was difficult to shoot, and the feeling of a crampted, uncomfortable environment was conveyed beautifully.

To me, SHIII conveyed that atmosphere pretty well, and the later games in the franchise were less successful. That's why I prefer SHIII over the later versions of the game.

I certainly agree with your preference for SH3 over SH5 (and SH4 for that matter). Just my reaction, but the submarine in SH5 seems too high-tech and cyber. It's like a modern replica of a vintage sports car - mostly looks right, but with A/C and power windows. And no oil drip on your pant leg! SH3, on the other hand, for all its dated graphics and clunky animation (or maybe because of them?) has a WW2, flesh-on-steel feel to it.

Plus, SH5 has a sense of being scripted that OHII can not erase. The man-management is a good idea, but the execution is very canned - after a while, you know everyone's story and how to respond to them, and it becomes more button-pushing. Personalities and back-stories never change. IMO. that aspect would have worked much better if the personal stories were less detailed but more variable.

OTOH, the graphics in SH5 are beautiful. And, as TDW points out, the game engine has the potential to be so much more detailed and accurate than SH3 can ever be. But, for now, SH3 is so much more immersive. It is the difference between role-playing and playing a part in a movie.

Will SHIII play on windows 7? If so I"ll give it a whirl.
