sh3 v sh5
About a week ago I tried sh3 and fell in love with it. Shortly after I became a subsim member because of all the great resources you guys provide for the game and the genre in general. I want to try SH5 but I have heard that it is not great(at least vanilla version). I don't want to know which one you think is better but instead what are some of the main differences between the two games as far as realism, game controls, campaign, etc. If I got sh5 with mods would it be similar to the realism and depth I can get from sh3 just with better graphics?

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
Here are some of the things I've said about them in the past: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...10&postcount=5 http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...39&postcount=4 I don't have time to go over all the differences right now, since I have to post from the library and only have an hour to cover all of Subsim, but if your question hasn't been answered by next week when I'm back online for real, I'll give you a full rundown. The differences are many. On the other hand both are very cheap right now, so there's no reason not to buy both and find out for yourself. |
the problem with SH5 is that to run the sobers mod soup which is recomended you need a beefy system

I do have a high-end system, and atm i would prefer SH3 GWX3 + Commander over SH5 with mods!! Not that i'm saying its bad, but when learned to get around in SH5, its too easy to lock on a ship and sink it!
And the bad german language, obviously made by english speaking persons, can make a smile on my face. Just my 2c:) |
Thanks for the replies guys! Well my system isn't beefy by any stretch of the imagination so I guess for now I will be stuck with sh3(which is perfectly fine with me!). I also read that sh5 is more like an RPG than a sim, I don't know if that's true but it makes me lose almost all interest.

The high end specs are usually necessary when large third party mods are added. |
... 5 will be the natural successor to 3...in the end. but who knows when that will be, until then
...my heart belongs to 3:sunny: |
I too think that SH3 is better than SH5. Personally, some of the things I do not care for with SH5 is the manual TDC with that stupid XO panel, the god awful Rec Manual, and Im not a fan of the campaign layout , also you can only sail in the Type VII series of boats. Now what does Sh5 have going for it? Well the graphics are pretty awesome, not that SH3 is terrible or anything, but its nice having a widescreen option, same with SH4. Also there is a ton of people who are modding it with updates almost daily, so it is possible that in the future that all the reasons that bug me could disappear. Finally, the game can be had for between 5-10 usd on amazon, which for what can be done even now with the game, warrants the purchase. I would even tell you to consider picking up SH4 too, even if US subs aren't your thing there are some nice mods available for the u-boat series in that game too, which can also be found for cheap. My recommendation is get all 3
