Default Im gonna dust this off, after shelving for 9 months

Im getting the itch to sub simulate again. My problem last time was I couldn't figure out how to install the mods.

The game was conversely both too easy and too hard. Too easy in the sense that the destroyers were super dumb. I only got killed by them if I made a huge mistake, or left time compression on while the ship was in danger and didn't have time to react.

The planes were not much of a threat at all. They never fired on me, I would think planes would be a huge threat to subs on the surface. There was barely a sense of danger while immersed in the sub simulator, as long as I had sea floor below me and could dive, I could get away from the destroyers escorting the massive convoys before they could get me. I guess the most difficulty I had was heading towards the UK in the harbor and the depth to the seafloor was like only 40 feet from the surface. Didn't give you any room to dive.

Conversely I found the game too hard. There was a mission I lost, that was around when I hung the game up because as far as I could tell it was impossible to beat the mission. I had to sink an allied troop-ship, I think it was in Scapa Flow. For one thing Ill be honest, I don't know where Scapa Flow is, other than it is heavily referenced in the game. I went to each of the coordinates high command gave me and then it said I had to return to the main base since I failed to sink the troop ship, all that work and time out at sea for literally nothing. I found that to be frustrating and was about the same time I shelved the game.

Im gonna delete a hard drive partition so I can install this game, here is what I need out of this thread and you the forum members.

Can someone link me to an extensive modification that makes the destroyers AI smarter, the planes actually will attack the submarine, easier access to the officers on the ship other than walking right up to them to talk to them, and tips on how to find that darn troopship? Nothing like killing 2000 or so soldiers with a few torpedoes.

I also need the modification installer, Im gonna give it another try.

I have to admit, without some kind of extensive modification, I got a few hours worth of entertainment from the game before I found the game was badly broken. It was frustrating finding the troop ship, the enemies were too freakin dumb to sink my sub, and the planes were practically pointless since they didnt so much as report my position or attack me with their machine guns.

Please help me, I would most appreciate it.

Dude, go to the 'Sh5 mods forum' (using the forum jump bar at the bottom of the page) and read the 'stickied' (top few) threads, really it's all there in black 'n' white, you just gotta look.

Ok but how do I find the troop ship in Scapa Flow, and where is Scapa Flow?

Im having trouble installing all the different mods. Some are .rar files, others are .7z files stuff Ive never heard of. Could someone get on xfire with me and walk me through installation of these?

You can download 7zip or ZipGenius to unzip the files you mentioned. Google them. They're free.

I use ZipGenius for all my work. Love the app, easy to use and does everything

Is it just me or are the electric torpedoes, atleast in the early-early part of the war, complete garbage?

Im playing it on realism settings and saving and reloading over and over so I essentially get infinite torpedoes, and they dont even blow up stationary destroyers, let alone moving ones. As far as I can tell my one electrine torpedo is a dud, everytime I fire it, no matter which angle I fire it at, or if the object is stationary, its really hard to tell cuz its not on medium where it outlines the hull and has a lock on feature, but the electric torpedo NEVER detonates, it always misses.

If you are trying to use magnetic detonators then yes, they will never detonate (on GR2 style ships). Problem with game since release that's never been fixed. It's impact only for detonators.

SUcks that I gotta leave town in about 2 and ahalf hours, but I think maybe I installed the IRAI correctly? Its on realism too if that helps.

The destroyers are a lot more aggressive, I was running periscope depth, sneaking into a harbor trying to sneak past the destroyer screen and then one barreled down on my. I dived and it started dropping depth charges, none came close but still.

Right now Im being circled by a destroyer who isnt quite sure where I am, Im 40m below the surface.

Also earlier this morning I had a destroyer park literally right on top of me, I figured I was screwed so I reloaded it from an hour earlier, but it was quite obvious he knew where I was, which I was surprised by considering it was night time and I was parked, but I didn't have silent running on.

Im gonna have to go over all the improvements IRAI gives you because the destroyers do seem smarter all of a sudden.

They are much smarter and their tactics are VASTLY improved over stock.

The one sitting above you is probably the director. If you are discovered by a HK (hunter-killer) group then it will dispatch a director (if the HK group has enough units). The job of the director is to direct everyone else to where you are. He goes all stop and stays within a certain radius of you just listening and letting everyone else know where you are. He is your worst enemy. Do everything you can to take him out. You are pretty much dead in this scenario unless you have excellent evading skills

The best advice is just don't get discovered

Ok I installed some mods, I think I got the IRAI one installed, the merchants now zig zag if they spot me, I think thats a sign of more intelligent AI.

Im in Lock Ewe, is this where I find the AMC ships? I found some merchant ships that look kinda like passenger liners, but I think they are suppose to show up as warships if they are AMC.

I need help locating these. Im almost all the way into the harbor and have made it well passed the destroyer screen.

I found an AMC ship in Loch Ewe plus two others in Scapa Flow; yes they are seen as warships. I dont know about you, but even though I went into both Harbours submerged and silent running, even after I sunk them the destroyers never raised a ping against me - they stayed stationary and showed no interest.

I have just recently installed Open Horizons II, the campaign mod; will see how that goes.

Yea I wasted 2 torpedoes on the destroyers trying to get out of the harbor.

Owell I got like 13 more. Im gonna try scapa flow next. I wasted about 2 hours (real time) in loch ewe before I figured out there was no AMC ships.

But they hunted you right? There are also other between the Faroes and Iceland; hunt 'em down! I was quite put off that they never pinged, or did anything...grr..

naw they did nothing. There is no sense of danger in this game. Im wondering if maybe I installed ARAI incorrectly. Im in Scapa flow looking for the armed merchants.

update: Just got 3 of them in Scapa Flow. Altogether it took 10 torpedoes, one of them took 4 to take down. Time for a refit Im down to 3 torpedoes.
