Ubisoft Shares Drop!

Is Ubisoft's strategy of DRMing up more business a success?
Shareholders must be aware of the customer resistance and are dumping Ubisoft.

2009 average share price was euros 0.87
Today's price is euros 0.47 a 50% drop. Pretty dramatic results after DRMing SH5, AC2 and Settlers.

It would appear that their DRM is turning into a Dive of Doom.

Moo!

Hi Brag.... I think you may have the wrong end of the stick here. The previous figures are accurate and the 2010 figure is estimated but if you look at the base figure, the share price is actually 10.90 euros. The figures you are looking at are the profit per share rather than the actual price........Easy mistake to make dude

It is also worth noting that the 2010 estimate is just that, an estimate and will no doubt have taken into account the current economic downturn

Thanks for the explanation.

After the Q4 report, the race is on... And will see how investors like this. But keep in mind that in their latest sales report 2008/9 the PC Market was but some 8% of total revenue. So even if the DRM cut away the whole PC customers, they could just withdraw from that segment (for any possible reason, probably piracy will be pulled out of the coffin again) and refocus business on consoles. But it is still fun to watch Ubisoft in its experiment to gather RL market data...

The drop in UBI share price all took place in the last quarter of 2008 when a lot of companies got hit. Its actually about the same now as it was in jan. 2009 and its actually gone up about 20% since SH5 was released.

Whatever weakness you see in the share price has more to do with the ongoing recession. Ubi is forecasting a loss in 2010. Don't forget that PC game sales only represent about 9% of Ubi's total revenues.

If you compare with EA's numbers, you see its an industry wide problem. EA, by way, is in worse shape than UBI, based on their numbers.

Other than UBI and EA, is there any large publisher still in mass market PC games?

I bet UBISoft is begging pirates to start stealing their stuff again! It's pretty bad when thieves don't even want to steal your crap these days!

Whats this post have anything to do with SH5?

The OP has an axe to grind and he is here everyday touting his BS.

He does not own SH5 nor does he plan on it.

His mission is to discourage other readers/players from playing a great game.

DRM is a dead issue, it prevented pirates from ripping the entire game. I call that a success, which is here to stay.

Mods please start taking care in what posts are productive towards the game and which are not. This thread should be moved to General Topics.

Default I don't think this thread has yet gotten out of hand

the concept of this thread is interesting and tho it may not be overly productive I personally see no harm in letting it continue to run it's course as a discussion of the overall business model of the attempt to protect a company investment, vs consumer rights and usability.
For my two cents, I fear that intrusive methods are here to stay, and may yet get worse, but that doesn't mean we should roll over and say nothing. I think the majority of this threads members have it right that, the negative effect of DRM on paying customers isn't going to register very highly to ubi given that its PC market share isn't as large as its counsel investment. I doubt the DRM will ever be removed from shV and I think that is unfortunate. I did buy the game, it is mostly broken in its current state, and I hope for it to improve before patch support goes away. I personally think that the "always on connection" is silly for a largely single player game, but my lap top can't run it any way so for now it has no effect on me personally, I only play it at home. I respect the folks who have chosen to hold out. and admire there conviction. I may have made a Faustian bargain in choosing to buy the game at full price, but I do want them to know that there is interest in good sub sim games. the best thing any one can do is write to the company and tell them how you feel and try to address there need to make a profit and protect there investment at the same time that you express why your needs aren't being met. I think that more than any thing will have real effect. just complaining accomplishes nothing.
