Default On the Absence of Preview Copies (So far)

I find this particularly worrisome. Four weeks out and nada.

But I was thinking. Maybe the servers they have dedicated to this project haven't been brought up to speed yet? I mean, you have to be online and on their server to play this game, right. So maybe the reason there are no preview copies out is because the server(s) they are dedicating to handing traffic aren't up yet?

I mean, I'm going out on a limb here, but you would think they're not using just any old server but something up to date that can handle the expected user load. Maybe that's not ready yet so in that case there's no need to have preview copies floating around? Dunno.

Anyway, I'm not very technologically oriented so someone who is should be able to speak to this issue with more authority. Hey. I can barely tie my shoes before coffee in the morning. Give me a break!

If it means they are working on the game rather than wasting time on preview material - all fine by me. But it could also mean they still have a lot to do before March 4th...

As tests of review versions by magazines have shown there ARE review versions around. They are, however, not finished, still have some bugs in them and most importantly none of us have access to them.

Ah, and if I remember right they did not have the campaign in them either. Just single missions.

very astoot (im sure thats spellled wrong) observation

IMO a game designed to need servers to run it must have the servers in operation to work and this may be the reason no preview copies were sent out since they would be unusable paperweights anyway.

not to mention doing this, if it feel into the wrong hands, might also give someone a head start to creating a work around for the online requirement

both of these things would do nothing possitive so it may only be that they havent released anything yet because they dont have anything to release yet

Very good point! I hadn't thought of that.

"Here's your preview copy, Neal. You can run it next month when we get everything up and running."

The screens and films are "fake", and they're really working on the next Star Wars film.

Ah, that explains the cheese factor of the "Your Crew" bios. They've got George Lucas doing the writing.

Right now, I imagine, the Market Suits, and the DRMs of Doom promotion department people, must be in a funk. All indications are they are in massive disaray.

Over 18,000 people have visited the DRM in SHV thread. Can't really tell what they think but that is a lot of people reading subversive literature.Ubi management must feel like the KGB as the Soviet system melted down.

You can't impose chains on people who are looking for rope to hang you.
DRM/OSP is the game equivalent of the Berlin wall. In four weeks it's going to crash.

Moo, moo, moo!

Good point.. I wonder however if the preview that was given to the German game magazin was a playable version and with that required a constant connection..

It was playable. It did not contain the campaign mode though. And they did not say anything about the DRM which could mean both that their early *caugh* preview version was without the DRM or that it was already installed and they just did not know by then that this was not only to protect the thing before it was launched from leaking to P2P but also to protect it till kingdom come.

Anyway, the number of review copies must be extremely limited and only a certain number of magazines seems to have access. So setting up a teeny tiny server that handles these limited connections shoudln't be a big issue. I even assume that the system is running already in full as they stated that they can dynamically assign new ressources to a game if more serverpower is needed due to higher demand. Sounds to me like a virtualisation of servers both concerning computing and storage. So right now there are just a few machines in their data center running with the DRM and on March 3rd they just pump it up a notch.

As far as i know the OSP is being tested with Settlers 7 beta. Review copys hasn't been shipped out yet and previews are playable but information allowed to be published are limited hence the little information.
My guess is that the major sites will receive their review copys about 2-3 weeks prior the release date. That's how it usually works

I'd have thought the server would have underwent stringent testing long before now considering the potential workload that will obviously be required of it from day one of release......wouldn't it??????
