earlier this month, a forum contributor mentioned that he edited his rank to LT in an effort to more closely align his starting rank with WWII USN reality.
so, i decided to try the same thing. changed my starting rank to LT. made sure that there were three parms in the UPC.cfg file and shoved off. RankDaysUS=90,180,180Nine successful missions into the career and i am still an LT and i find myself wondering why SH4 will not promote a USN LT to LtCdr. I do not think the mods have anything to do with this...i think it is SH4. I'm not certain KM, but check this out:
[Rank 12]Notice that the Lieutenant is missing some of the text... I doubt if that has anything to do with it, but the "XPRequirement= 20000" might... ?? From the looks of it, the Lieutenant rank is not meant as a player rank, since it has "LevelUp= Base". Maybe if you change that to "Restricted" and change the info text, like the other player ranks? dunno though. You would probably have to add a <LT> description to one of the text files also, for those description lines, but I cannot find a file for that. Let us know how it goes though, if you can get it to cooperate with you.

i edited the Ranks file by placing some text in these two parms in order to see if/where it appeared. DescriptionWhenPlayerHasTheRank=Just typing something here to see where it appears <b>LTCDR</b>this is the result. ![]() so, again, i will agree with you that LT appears to be not designed as a player-Captain rank. since there are like six or seven ranks available, and the US side only uses three, there should be a way of dropping one of the flag ranks and inserting the LT rank at the front of the list. in what file is the player-Captain ranks in the graphic above stored? if we could disect that file we may be able to figure out how to drop one rank and replace it with another. i reserve the right to "noodle" around for a possible solution. if you hear a loud noise and see a mushroom cloud in the midwest you'll know i did something bad, by accident of course. ![]() i have always maintained (through experience) that the US-side is programmed differently than the German side and this is probably another manifestation of that difference.

I had forgotten about the rank epaulette images. I don't think the Lieutenant rank has those... hmmm...
This text editing is all in Ranks.upc, btw. It looks like though, that the <LTCDR> text just tells the game to make red, bolded text, so substituting <LT> should work fine there. As mentioned above, I would attempt to change the XPRequirement= 8150to something like XPRequirement= 15000which should then make it a player rank. If the game chokes on that, then delete the full admiral "[Rank 18]" listing, and renumber the others below. I don't see any obvious reason that wouldn't work... though it is SH4... You'll probably also have to make "AvailableSpecialAbilities= NULL", and should probably set "GetSpecialAbilityChance= 0" to match the other player ranks, unless the mod you are in has those for a player rank. Then just add that "Rank <b>LT</b>" text to the end of the last two lines. Surely it will work without having to delete anything... ![]()

Just a side note. To my knowledge, no LT ever commanded a fleetboat, a few commanded S-Boats prior to and in early phase of war but most were LCDR.

made no difference. still didn't get promoted after a successful mission (3 pts and an award). i don't think anything but a re-design will work. i'll bet if i change my rank to LtCDR and have a successful next mission, i'll be promoted to CDR. any takers? ![]() ![]()

and for the Kaleuns who were making book on whether the changes referenced above would promote an LT to LtCdr.....it did not work. and....when i changed my rank to LtCdr and returned from the next successful career-mission, i was duly promoted to Cdr. LT is not a valid rank for a player-captain if you expect to be promoted.

This makes me think of all the weird residual things that must've been added to the game in preparation for features, and were never fully realized.
Either that or some of the glitc- er "features" broke the systems those components belonged to.

Within the 1.5 UBM SH4, on the US-side, a user-player begins as a LtCdr and has the capability of two promotions. on the German-side, there are five or six ranks that a user-player may acquire. so, my thought was that if i change my starting rank to LT (and a couple of other parameters) i could maybe extend the range of ranks to four. however, after playing a while with that rank and having over a dozen successful missions, my rank is still LT. that behaviour leads me to believe that user-player promotions seem to be hard-coded by UBI. all of the ranks are properly defined but Ubi's design for a US commanding officer do not have the wherewithal to advance a user-player from LT to LtCdr. ![]() ![]()
