Default Can someone please suggest a good periscope mod for Silent Hunter 3 w/GWX?

Hello Subsimmers.

My name is Mike K, and I live in Indiana, in the USA. I have only posted here on Subsim a tiny bit, and that was a long time ago. I have recently started playing Silent Hunter 3 more seriously. What a great game! I am currently playing a fantasy XXI mission out of Brest in early 1942, and a regular VIIC mission out of Lorient in mid 1942. I'm trying different boats and different things. I have turned off the external view and the event camera. That little change really made a big difference in difficulty and realism. It added a feeling of claustrophobia that I like ;-)

I have modded up the boats, and they are looking and running sweet. I also added a bunch of music and broadcasts to the gramophone, added a 4GB patch, and added a great wolf emblem I found here in the downloads section. I have also installed SH3 Commander, and start missions from there.

OK, after rambling on, let me get to my point. Is there a good periscope mod for Silent Hunter 3 with GWX? I found this thread:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...11&postcount=1

But when I went to the media fire link in his post, but I needed a password that I don't have. I tried opening up an account at mediafire, but that didn't work and I couldn't access U-48Kriegsmarine files. He hasn't been around since January so I haven't sent him a PM. I think he was having some problems with that mod anyway.

Any help with finding a periscope mod would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello Mike !

Welcome back to this great game and this great community !

Personnally, I'm using these 2 mods in order to have a better looking periscope view :

- OLC_GUI_127 (D/L : ftp://Maik:Woelfe@hartmuthaas.no-ip....OLC_GUI_127.7z) ***

- MANOS OPTICS for OLC_GUI_127 (D/L : ftp://Maik:Woelfe@hartmuthaas.no-ip....C_GUI_127).rar) ***

I'm very satisfied with this combo.

Makman94 is on the point to release a very new promising GUI mod. Look here : http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=220504

*** PS : If the website asks you, Username = Maik, Password = Woelfe

Thanks for the quick reply, Kendras. 2 mods now and another one coming soon. Fantastic! Wow they look sharp.

I am going to try them right now. I assume you load them in the usual way with JSGME. Do you have to load them in the sequence you posted them? First, OLC_GUI_127, > then > MANOS OPTICS for OLC_GUI_127?

I just noticed I've downloaded like 116 downloads and never have contributed a dime to this site. I am being quite the welfare bum aren't I. I can certainly sign up for one of the levels. $10.00 at least, I am getting stuff for pennies on the dollar anyway for all the quality work I've been using.

Thank you. and I will donate soon, certainly today. The mods worked, but completely changed the layout. Hmm, wondering if I can access the ship stations via game commands or have to use the keys. Still testing....

@Kendras, is there some way to go to the stations directly from the game using the OLC_GUI_127 mod?

In the "Surface Attacks in OFC GUI 1.2.6" PDF that came with the file, on page 3, it shows the station icons right above the Officers Icon. But in my game all I have is the green noise meter. This is a great looking mod so far, but I sure would like to be able to click on the stations instead of using the keyboard.

To see the different options, you just have to click on one officer's icon.

@Kendras

What I meant was the station icons, which seemed to be missing. I didn't want to have to press F2, F3, and so on to change stations. In the stock game, they are located on the left side of the screen. They appear when you scroll the mouse over to the left side.

But I found out with the >> OLC_GUI_127 + MANOS OPTICS for OLC_GUI_127 << mods, if you scroll to the bottom of the message area at the bottom of the screen, they pop up in the message area. Then you just click on the icons in the normal fashion and you are good to go.

Thanks for bringing these mods to my attention, man, they are beautiful!

As others have put in, some excellent recommendations.

Currently using the Hitman optics. It is simplistic, but comes with a little chart to know what the vertical mils are worth on the periscope vs. the height of the ship.

For me, I love it.

Have gotten into very simplistic behaviours with it that require a lot of math but it is fun and works well for me.

Here you will have to get target speed by,

1. Multiple observations; and putting them on the chart (F5).
2. Timing the target.
3. If practical, pacing the target on your beam at a distance.
4. Occasionally a contact report will give you a good starting point for convoy course and speed.
4. Educated guesses and a combination of the above.

At some point in time, with the simplicity of the Hitman optics, after using it A LOT... you WILL.. reach a point where you start estimating things in your head when the enemy doesn't play along with the firing solution you spent so much time putting on the map.

Hard to explain but at some point in time you will start visualising better/faster for solving problems. And I attribute some of this to the Hitman optics.

It has altered the way I play the game. Hey, that torpedo missed. I goofed the target speed, or something else just didn't work... You know what? At night I am going to catch up and try again...even if, it is 9am right now...

Those first ships, in a line, I am going to time them...from that, I am going to attack the rear ships based on the speed I got from observing the lead ships....

Those are just a few examples.

I have found it forces me to be immersed in the game more to a degree that I like.

<snipped>

My head is swimming with all the great new mods. New for me, that is. I have a mishmash of things going that is working pretty well right now. Lots of fun. If you ever invade New York harbor using GWX, you will be amazed at how realistic the harbor is. The Statue of Liberty, the city, the Empire State building is there in great detail. It's something else.
