Default Mods for a totally new player to Submarine Simulators?

Hello everybody,

I am a total, total noob when it comes to Submarine Simulators. I have literally 0 experience with them. I picked up SH5 and started playing it a little and have to say, I am thoroughly enjoying it so far. Alot of games I've played I have always modded, and reading that SH5 is a heavily moddable game, I decided to ask which mods to pick up.

I'm particularly interested in cosmetic mods, for inside the sub etc, rather than general graphic mods, which I find to be good enough already. Bug fixes would be nice, an easier way to manage my crew, hopefully this should give you a good idea on what mods I'd like to work with.

Are there any overhaul mods that I should try? Keeping in mind that I don't want anything too complicated due to this being my first try and Sub sims.

I must also ask, in my current campaign I've sunk two ships in the Southern Western part of the English Channel, where the mission is located, but the bar doesn't go up to show I've sunk about 14k tonnage out of 100k, what gives?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome aboard.

Unfortunately, the unmodded SH5 resembles more of an arcade shooter than a simulation. In other words, if you want the most out of this game, grab mods.

Sober's Mega Mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=192374) provides a comprehensive list of most of the mods that you may want. As for individual mods, the top three mods you'll actually want to start with are TDW's New UI (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=1582) which provides a comprehensive interface suitable for a simulation, IRAI (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=3866) which enhances enemy AI and allows planes to actually attack you, and FX Update (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=3867) which adds large numbers of new effects for enhanced immersion and allows fires to actually damage a ship overtime.

There are many more mods that I use such a Real Sink, One Ship One Torpedo, and Historically Accurate German Flags. Mods really change the game but expect to restart the campaign numerous times.

Is there anyway I can learn to properly play the game? I'm eager to play it the way it was meant to be played, perhaps there is some sort of pdf document which goes in depth, or perhaps even a video.

That'd be fantastic

On another note, for anyone willing to suggest some mods, I do enjoy the Campaign feature, so any Campaign Enhancement mods would be greatly appreciated

Is there some sort of Mod Manager I could use to make sure the mods don't clash with each other, or something similar?

Get your game patched to 1.2. Use the gu.exe in the Silent Hunter 5\Support\GameUpdater folder. I would suggest to got to Ubisoft and download the patch from there, plus the Uplay installer, too. Uplay is up to version 4.1+.

Campaign feature - Open Horizons - check out the updates and download links at the first post.

One of the things you want to learn is how to perform manual TDC; it's more in line with an actual simulation and more fun an immersive than simply pointing the periscope and lining up your number with the enemy's.

Unfortunately, the game itself doesn't explain how to perform manual TDC but there are videos on Youtube as well as tutorials right here that explain how to do it.

I won't go into too much detail here, but the basic rundown is this: ID the target, plot its course, find its speed, pick a distance along said course to fire, find the target's Angle off Bow at the firing point, wait until it arrives, then fire.

Default Thanks

I have been playing silent hunter games for decades. If it were not for the talented individuals who are very creative and strive for better game play, my interest in them would have been minimal. Thank you all for keeping them more interesting.
