Noob sticky tutorial request

Hi Everyone

I really want to like this game and have been doing my best for the last few weeks but I can't seem to be able to even grasp the basics properly. The manual that comes with the game is next to useless however I have found some very useful information on the forum by searching. Is it possible to put together a noob's guide in one place which goes from the basics through to having a successful campaign.

As I said above I have been using SH5 for a lot of hours and so far have only been able to sink one merchant using the deck gun because all of my torpedoes missed what I thought was a sitting duck! I did find a tutorial on how to use the TDC and now it is taking me ages to find another ship to sink!

I am sailing around and one of the crew will say something like "Would you like to establish a patrol pattern?" or something like that and I don't know how to say "Yes"!! When you click on the navigator that is not an option.

So the topics I would love to see in one place would be to do with how to get properly started in the game. As confidence builds I would be happy then to set the realism settings higher. As it is I just feel a bit stupid and going around, literally in circles!

How to go on patrol properly-the sea is vast so where is the best place to look?

How to effectively use torpedoes?

How to effectively use the deck gun?

Best evasive maneuvers?

How to set heading to view? (is it possible using the mouse from within the game?)

How do I turn on the gramaphone I have read about?

Is it possible to re-map the keys in the game. My laptop doesn't have a separate numeric keypad, just a row of numbers below the Function keys.

I am sure there must be lots of people in the same situation as me. I've looked forward to the game for ages and find myself frustrated because of lack of information provided with the game. Not to mention the frustration of the game closing because the UBI server has malfunctioned somewhere...

This site is a great resource and I want to thank everyone for their contributions and enthusiasm, it is what has helped me persevere so far.

Thank you for the tutorials and what I would love is a post that just has all of these various tutorials in one post. I know the information is all here on the forum but just takes a long time to find. I don't get much time each evening and would love if the information was more accessible without having to read tons of posts!

Going to try to find some unescorted merchants now....
