Hello all!
Have been out of business for awhile. Is there known issues with mods and vista? I tried to tweak some Trigger Maru files (engine orders, crash dive depths etc.) with no luck. Changes I made appears in the game files properly, but still no in-game differensies. I have no idea what's the matter. Never seen this happen before (with SHIII and XP) I used JSGME to intall. -RC- |

Hello "RDP" and thanks, both welcome and the link!
I'll try to run the JSGME in compatibility mode, that's only thing I haven't tried yet. But the fact the files "are in" with no results in game - that's something what I just can't understand. How can that be possible???? ![]() But, I'll try once more. (At least, the game is too great to be abandoned) Any info about Vista + SHIV will be highly appreciated, I'm new with both. Greetings, -RC- |

Try what JScones mentions in the post, in the meantime if i see anything related I will pass it along. You could do a search here and see what that turns up.

Run JSGME as admin - right click on it and choose run as administrator or change it in the compatibility tab to always run as admin. I have the same problem if I don't run it as administrator.

Ted and RDP.
Thanks for help! Now I have tried both admin. and compatibility mode, separate and together. Still no luck. What have I messed up, dunno. Next thing I'll try is start again totally fm beginning, I mean uninstalling the game, patching and so on. Big guestion: Should I somehow run the game in compatibility mode too? It's just I can't find how to do it. I have done that before with other games and with XP - no problems. It is just I can't find how to do it with vista. -RC- |

Archie, what is UAC?
Got CTD when loading the game Following steps were taken before CTD: - Uninstalling the game, checking no data nor files left into the PC. - Reinstalling the game in compatibility mode (XP, SP2). - Got desktop icon, which wasn't provided earlier. - Set compatibility mode via desk top icon (XP, SP2). - Patched to 1.4 - not in compatibility mode (forgot, if even possible). - Unzipped mods TM 176, TM sound, TM GFX-ROW V5, RSRDC 320, RSRDC 320 patch 1. - Tweaked contacts.cfg and submarine files in TM. Made minor adjustments in radio contact ranges, contact types (single, small, medium, large) and contact report ranges (close, medium, long ranges), engine orders for all USS submarine classes, periscope depths, snorkel depths, max. depths, crash dive depths - all changes made with care. - Installed JSGME 2.0.? into SH4 folder, set compatibility mode and run as administrator once. - Dragged and dropped separate modfolders to MODS folder in SH4 folder. - Installed mods with JSGME in compatibility mode as administrator and in order TM, TM sound, TM GFX-ROW, RSRDC 320, RSRDC 320 patch 1 - Tried loading the game. Noted the backround pic was now different than before. CTD before reaching main menu. - "Uninstalled" compatibility mode via desk top icon. - "Uninstalled" compatibility mode in E-drive after inserting the disc. - Tried loading again. Backround pic was different again, now I think fm TM. However not sure about that. - CTD again before reaching the main menu. So: Any ideas, what is this? Really never seen anything like this happening before. I don't believe patching should have been done in compatibility mode. ![]() Greetings, -RC- |

Anther question: When you ran notepad to edit the text files did you launch it as administrator?
The short story is anytime you are editing files under c:\Program Files you need to right-click the app and launch as administrator. Note: Having your account be a member of the" Administrators" group is not enough. You either have to use the built in account called "Administrator" (turned off by default) or launch the app as described above. The long story is that UAC is a set of increased security stuff in Vista. It's necessary for Vista be more secure, however it's also a bit of a pain because people and programs are used to operating in Windows' previous lax environment. Part of UAC is to no longer allow normal privilege applications to save files under the C:\Program Files directory. However, in order to avoid breaking existing applications, they added a silent file redirection where normal app-writes to folders under Program Files are redirected to another place (somewhere under the user data folders, IIRC). When running at the highest security level the writes to Program Files are not redirected. Anyway, you may not be seeing your changes reflected in the game because when you saved them, they were saved to a different location than you thought. |

Yes, I tweaked the files before activation. No, no mods which made any changes over the files I edited. I think Powerthigs gave the right answers. 1. I didn't ran the notepad as administrator. 2. I came to same conclusion that some of the files are saved in different place than you think they are. The most clever thing in vistas security seems to be, that it looks like changes are actually made. I have seen "my files" to be just in place in game folder - no in-game results anyway. So it looks like the system is creating somekind of "false file" to be seen in correct place, but actually it won't be used. I might be wrong in this, but this is how it looks like to be. My girlfriend's cousin is married with computer professional, I'll ask him later today. Resent events: - Unactivated all mods. - Reactivated them again. - Run the game without any CTD's, what is kind of miricule - However, TM seems to be just fine, only changes made by me are not there. RSRDC is not working, I think I can tell it because the orders I got are just in-stock junk. Big Q is: Why vista allowes some changes to be made while others are abandoned? I can understand this notepad thing, but why some mods are taken and some left out? I have a feeling I should understand this, but I'm too tired to think anymore. Have to get some sleep now. Big thanks for everyone's support, see you tomorrow (or today...), I hope. -RC- |

Don't know, those are some strange happenings. I'm running vista 64 and as long as I run JSGME and SH4 in admin mode, I'm fine. I don't even have to run in xp compat mode.
Perhaps mod order is the problem? RSRD after TM and are you sure you got the TM compatible RSRD download? |

If you have uninstalled and reinstalled, why haven't you followed the first suggestion made by RDP/JScones?
Long story short. Don't install in C:\Program Files. This way you can leave UAC on, don't need compatibility mode and don't have to run as administrator. You can leave Vista at max security settings, without problems, dialogs popping up, you can edit the files without problems (no run as admin either) etc...
