Default It's been a while....

Wow, I haven't been around these parts for over a year. The last time I was here, SH5 was a disaster. It required an internet connection to play it, and the consensus was that it was a buggy, unfinished game.

So where is it now? Have the excellent modders made it playable and look good? I see that it can now be purchased for $5, but is it any good? Are there any supermods for it?

I see some old friends are still here....Sailor Steve, Jimbuna etc. Good to see.

Yep, we're still here. It's nice to see you posting again. Too bad you were away, though, or you'd know about our (my) bad reaction to at least three people every week asking "Is it worth it now?" Take a look through the forums to get the answer you need.

Reading through the threads here and in the Mods Workshop, it looks like a lot of hard work has been put in and a lot of things got fixed, but I think the game was fatally flawed at release.

I still fire up SHIV from time to time....I think I'll stick with that.

I like 5 well enough, though it really takes a different direction than the one I want to move in. SH4 is great, but still suffers from the lack of modding that SH3 recieved. I still play 3 the most.

I would say it's a fantastic game if you can put in around 50h reading the forum and another 20h to fiddle around with mods.
That is what I have done the last 2-3 weeks getting in to SHV again after I left it a long time ago. Now after 2-3 weeks Im sitting here still modding but playing a good game still figuring stuff out making it better and better mod by mod. I think I have over 20mods by now.

So yes it's a good game just not that accessible unfortunately.

Edit: ops it was 49mods xD

That's why I mentioned supermods in my earlier post. I installed supermods in SH3 and SH4, and they were great. The more individual mods you add, the greater the chance for a conflict, even if you are unaware that you have caused one.

Welcome Back! And just so you know, you don't need an internet connection to play the game anymore.

A good place to start with basic mods can be found here:

I'd imagine it still needs online authentication after installation.
Are patches available for download external to steam or the UBI servers - IOW do it myself ?

The price is currently right for my curiosity

vanjast,

You don´t need internet connection to play SH5, only when installing i guess it will "phone home" to validate the code that came with the DVD. Concerning Steam version I can't help....

The offline setting of the Launcher can be seen in this post: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=189245

TDK, i have recently got SH5 for x-mas and began the task of applying mods and patches. i have to say it looks fantastic and i think it is the way forward for the Silent Hunter Sim series. but for a techno-newb like me i have found it very hard to apply the mods and see the results. there is a lot of work being done on SH5 and thank god for that because i want to get in to it like i enjoy/love SH3+GWX+ALL THE MODS!!
but i get the feeling it is a ways off yet to getting there. it does not have the stability of SH3, but when it does it will be great no doubt about it.

Also TDW is making great headway in a GR2 app to import/export models so that should bring great advancement to the merchants and naval vessels numbers within SH5.
