Default Interface theory

In hard core realism settings.

what if there is almost no interface / hot keys - at all.

all orders and commands have to be given to crew directly.

all stations have to be accessed by walking over to them

etc

Then it would probably better if we had Voice Recognition to compensate for the slower speed, if you have to issue commands using the mouse and multiple choice Dialogue.

But the Idea has something to it.

Even if that is not the case on release, it should be very very easy to mod it. Writing a new interface is hard but simply removing the existing interface (except for whatever pops up when you click on a crew member) should be quick.

The way I played in the other versions was on the assumption my orders were being relayed. Not sure if I like the idea of going from compartment to compartment to get things done. Assuming what you say is true.

I think there was somebody who suggested that a few times, in his very first post actually... karamma-something....

If the interface is fully moddable, we're already discussing about a 3d-only interface. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160861. ALmost impossible to do in SH3&4, but we might be able to achieve it in SH5.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=151937 This was actually my very first post, so it's a sort of obsession to me.

I would go for that in a big way, I have to say, as long as all the systems that a captain were likely to use were fully modeled.

I would love to see order delay as well: Skipper on the bridge and orders all ahead slow, for example, and it takes a little while to get the message to the engine room as its passed along the boat. Stuff like that would be neat.

I've always liked the idea of a proper command sim and one of my few real hopes for SH5 is that they have decided to have a proper bash at it.

Better than that, all major controls are in the...Control Room! The captain conducts all operations from there. Torpedoes are fired from there. Steering and diving controls are there. The engines are run from the engine room, but that's what the Engine Telegraphs are for. The only time the captain ever needs to leave the Control Room when in combat is if they are surfaced. Then he's on the bridge, and has some duplicate controls there and voice tubes to the Control Room for any communication needs. The control room also has voice tubes to every other compartment so they can report problems and he can ask questions. Every department also has 'runners' to relay messages to the captain. In the book Das Boot they translated the name for these as 'Johnnies'. Don't know if that's an adequate translation, but in fact every ship - even a u-boat - has sufficient personel that some can be detailed as messengers in critical situations.

Bottom line - everything that the captain needs to do can be done from the bridge/control room. Visiting any other compartment is purely fluff candy.

I'm the kommandant, dammit. I don't want to have to micromanage my crew by making sure they all go on watch or go to their bunks at the appointed times; I sure as heck don't want to have to physically go to every crucial station to give an order regarding what to do with it.

Rank has its privileges and I have rank plus an assortment of junior officers, lackeys, not to mention a series of freakin' tubes. I should never have to leave the command room to make my wishes known and obeyed.

I have spoken. Make it so!

im pretty sure you dont have to leave the command room

the second in command will relay your instructions to the remainder of the crew as i understand it.

You just tell old Josef what you want done... he will make sure they do it.

FIrst thing I thought about when I read the scheme for having the captain do everything and little/lack of hotkeys was the rapid fire sequence of actions you go through when committing to a torpedo attack on a convoy.

How quickly can you give all the orders for firing multiple eels at multiple targets while making course/speed/depth changes if you have to do all that in first person at different stations?
